Remote Server Running Games?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this... move as needed. I don't have much experience with servers, so please bear with me.

Would it be possible to rent a server capable of running games (say, WoW or Diablo 3) and connect to them remotely? I'm not interested in building my own server, rather, just rent it. If this is possible, where can I rent such servers?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm behind a firewall, but don't those servers come with pre-installed games? I would be more interested in installing the game on the server myself. Kind of like a remote desktop access, except I don't want to use my own remote desktop.

I'm not sure you'd be able to do that.

Servers are meant to run well... server software that doles out information to multiple clients or players. Remote services are really just used to log into the server and launch programs, change settings, etc. They weren't designed to relay full screen moving graphics, the client is usually in charge of that.

Onlive is just a hardware box with compression logic inside of it that allows them to send "fullscreen" graphic images to your box from their servers. Compression allows them to make the images small enough to transfer and still resemble live game play. There are latency issues as far as I know, as well as issues with the maximum quality you can achieve.

Typically the client handles the graphics because of the latency associated with having a server need to calculate and send every frame the client displays.

Is it possible? Yes

Is it reasonable? No

While a Windows dedicated server or VPS may be able to run a game at low settings it would be impossible to play as there would be way to much lag between the two computers, also having uninterrupted mouse and keyboard focus would be hard. A much better solution is building a budget computer or adding to your existing. Also by the time you pay for such resources you would have been able to build an adequate gaming computer .

Newer versions of workstation can send keyboard/mouse/video data over a network w/ DirectX 9.0c enhanced graphics... But you would need an awesome server w/ low latency.. works great at the office LAN.

The built in Remote Desktop that comes with Windows will not allow you to launch DX games.

WRONG. Those are Windows games and there are NO Windows options to let you send those kind of graphics offsite....Don't believe me? Try playing even a DX9 game over RDP and let me know what happens....Let alone WoW or D3.

I've been deploying all sorts of Virtual Desktops lately...this has gotten better as of late, but that is pretty incredible if legit.

However, for something like Crysis you are probably going to need a 10GB network speed and it would be impossible in the OP's situation of wanting to rent a machine to play a game online.

You can rent "game servers" though...a game server hosts the game for multiplayer games. Some games you can only rent servers and can't run your own, but I don't think that is what you are after. If you hear about a BF3 Game Server it is just hosting the game...it likely can't even run the game it self. It only runs the software for people to play the game on their own local machines.

There's a video two posts above yours showing people doing exactly that tongue.gif. That remoteFX looks pretty neat, I'll have to try it out soon.
