3570k trying to get 4.0Ghz stable

Thread Starter
Yesterday I got my upgrade set (Asus P8Z77-V Pro, 3570k and 8GB Samsung). Now I thought overclocking this would be easy, but it hasn't been that easy.

What I tried:
OCCT Linpack test - fails within 10 minutes with 4.0Ghz at 1.2, raised to 1.21v and still fails
Intel Burn Test - fails within 10 minutes 4.0Ghz at 1.21v

I thought 1.2v was already quite high for just 4.0Ghz? I'm not looking for an extreme overclock. Maybe there are some other bios settings I'm not aware of.

My Samsung memory modules are running 2200mhz 10-10-10-28 at 1.5v and are memtest 4.2 stable (2 full passes).

Basically all I want is 4.0Ghz stable. My cooler is a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and it idles at 28c and load in OCCT Linpack is 58c and 69c in Intel Burn Test.

What is your load line calibration set to?
Try resetting to optimized defaults and just set the voltage and multiplier. 1.2v should be more than enough for 40x.

Load line calibration was set to 'high'.

I just reset to optimized defaults and reset the memory overclock to 1866mhz 9-9-9-28 at 1.5v. Put CPU voltage to 1.2v again, and going to see if this is stable at 4.0Ghz.

Edit: now I can't seem to overclock at all. I set the CPU multi to 40 and when I go into Windows it tells me it's 34 (default). Also with the CPU multi set to 40 it flat-out says the multi is 34 in the CPU menu...

Should I disable 'Asus multicore enhancement'?

You should disable multicore enhancement if you want the multiplier to decrease when idle or low load. Do you have conflicting OC software installed?

No I never use software to OC, so that can't be it. I'm used to the classic bios, so this is the first time I'm using UEFI myself.

Also my mouse doesn't work in the bios, which is also quite an annoyance.

And stock voltage is, 1.0 ~ 1.1v?

And yeah I know 4.0Ghz should work with 1.2v, which is why I posted here. Should I use other software to test besides OCCT and IBT?

And the other problem is that the board now forces the 34x multiplier when I set it to 40 myself.
