I acknowledge that my knee-jerk reaction of "that's useless, hardware support on linux isn't always the best," is short-sighted, because the more software support you start to get, the better the hardware support will get. My fear is that it's a lot late to the game for desktops, as the gaming industry is slowly moving away from desktop gaming.

Either way this is good news. Been thinking about trying linux for a while. The one thing holding me back is gaming support.

I used to run kubuntu on my laptop and loved it. My server is running Ubuntu server if I can have steam for linux I will use wine to run league of legends and never use windows again. biggrin.gif

Well...until you wanted to run something other than LoL. You can't use WINE for everything.

Linux version of Steam is not game support. It might only ever amount to nothing more than the steam client.

Though I am betting there will be all sorts of indegames on there for Linux before too long...if not on day one; and they will be cheap. A Linux port of the source engine will probably happen right after HL:3 is released.

Well this is promising, would love to see more game development for linux, would also force hardware companies to actually improve there device support and drivers. Maybe this would inspire companies to also get more people working on OpenGL and general improvement in the linux area

C++ is a mid-level programming language that can be compiled for almost any processor architecture in existence.
Linux' graphics API is OpenGL.
The whole point of this, I think, would be to release native Linux games that run on OpenGL and do not need workarounds such as WINE.
I could imagine Steam to be officially supported on Ubuntu and perhaps Fedora or OpenSUSE, but also working on almost any other distro with some figuring out...

Hmm this is the only reason I have not really explored the option of going Linux, when this happens I think I will take a little break from windows. Heck I might never come back.
