I really don't want to watercool for several reasons.
It takes me 8 tim applictions to be able to get tim on properly tongue.gif, I know what to do but I really don't have the patience to route tubing, fit in a pump and res, plan out radiator spacing etc and it's not worth taking it apart every 6 months for me (I upgrade regularly, I've had two motherboards and three gpus in the past 5 months with two cases, over 42 fans and 7 monitors along with three ssds, six harddrives and ASSORTMENTS OF FAN FILTERS - I REALLY HATE FAN FILTERS) and having to go through all the trouble of draining, reblocking etc.
It seems like it's the only way to get both performance and silence :\.
I am currently waiting for the 7990 as I'm sure I could fit two in and keep noise at moderate levels without much OCing.
The 680s/690s are more power efficient but at high resolutions their bandwidth makes their permanence terrible and they have bad scaling which is my problem.
On a side note:
Are there any cases which are "Sound resistant" and have enough airflow to accommodate three 250-300w GPU's
Thanks a lot to all the responses.
I think my best bet is to hope the 7990s have decent scaling and get one of them paired with one 7970. OC the 7970 ridiculously when it's by itself in certain games with horrible scaling so 1250mhz+ on the core, and have a 7990 with it in trifire and have them both in a 1150 core clock region when they're together. I'll do the "mod" on the 7970 with a h60 to keep it cool and silent and keep the air cooler on the 7990 or get an aftermarket cooler like an arctic accelero or hopefully sapphire makes a cooler akin to the 5870x2 triple fan.
This means that all games will run great and everything'll be nice and quiet I guess.
Or would it be better to get two 680s and call it a day? Two DC2 top editions or twin frozrs when they come out biggrin.gif (with non referance PCBS which have VOLTAGE CONTROL mad.gif ).
Oh and wait for the "big kepler" OFC.

Cosmos II I've heard is very soundproof.

anything more than dual HD 7970s is just waste. even for eyefinity dual CF is more than enough. You could wait for HD 7970 X2. information about few cards is slowly leaking.

I just went with it and got two gtx 680 top editions.

They'll hopefully hold me until the "big kepler".

The dCu's are known for being silent cards.

Yeah but I picked them more for OCing potential.

I don't plan to push them TOO much in SLI, probably 1250 but for a single card as much as I can go would be amazing. 1280+mhz smile.gif.

+ I can't wait for the new drivers to be released, why I dumped my 7970 was because the scaling of 680s was terrible but with new drivers they are apparently better, and I'll still keep my 7970 so if the 7990s come out and trifire is better I'll go for it but I doubt I will.

Thank you though, and what do you mean "Cherry picked bs" frown.gif. From the retailers I had available the 680 oc and top editions were the EXACT SAME PRICE (which were instock) from amazon.com at $630. For comparison a 7970 here is roughly $820 and it's a stock sapphire one so I couldn't pass up an instock card at a "deal" especially with all these new games and expansions coming out and my exams almost being over. (Only one IGCSE left and it's geography which is EASY) so I might as-well get a card now.

Thanks for your help smile.gif.

Edit: I doubt they're quiet let alone silent in SLI once I've pushed them with only 1.5 slots of space between each other.

My current motherboard would have only allowed half a slot but I purchased the R4E over my sabertooth for these cards specially so my wallet is in pain tongue.gif

Thank you and I hope I do as-well as I've been worried recently about driver issues and the like D: but I think I can manage it.

Also I'm planning on picking up the Cosmos 2 but I'm worried about temperatures as it seems worse at (AIR) cooling, especially in the GPU section as it doesn't have a bottom intake but if it's quieter then biggrin.gif.
