I'd recommend the 1230, 1240, 1270, 1280, or 1290 (all version 2). As has been stated, the IB archecture will help a lot with power savings. I specifically chose these IB Xeons because they do not include a GPU. You'll want to offload the graphics to a dedicated video card(s).

I agree with this. Get a proper workstation.

I've no personal experience with Xeon motherboards or workstation-grade RAM, but you will want a Gold or Platinum certified PSU. How big you need can't be determined until you know the other parts you are going to use as wattage will vary.

[Edit]
I'm not sure what options AMD has, several posters have mentioned some models. You can find Nvidia's multi-monitor business class cards here. You'll note that they support a maximum of 4 per card.

Just as an FYI... Ivy should operate like Sandy in that when you insert a GPU it disables the integrated GPU built into the CPU. If that was the only reason you were selecting the Xeon's then that would not be justification.

Now remembering back to the old days the Xeon's should require a ECC memory. However there is no major calculations or DB's running on the proposed workstation so I am not sure ECC Memory would be required, nor the Xeon. If someone else has in-depth knowledge regarding these CPU's and if they would indeed be useful please weigh in with your opinion.

my .2c

Intel SB-e Hexa-core chip
2011 Board rocking 8 dimms
32GB ram
ATI card supporting 6 eyefinity - Nvidia if you are that way inclined but as 'badass' as sli is, its a bit of a pain so single card is better.

Will do the job just fine. This is taking into account budget is high.
