Alright here's the situation I'm building a new comp, and i have one of these. I was wondering should i get 2 more and sli them, giving the old one i have to wifes comp. or spend the 270 dollars and just get a better card for myself and then give wife my old one?

Motherboard: Sabertooth 990fx
CPU: Phenom x4 960t
Ram: 2x4gb corsair vengence ddr3 1600
PSU: OCZ 750w fully modular 80+ bronze

Should prob just spend the 270 on a new one for myself right?

Give her the 550Ti, Buy yourself new toy. Win.

The 7850 comes in around $260, the superior GTX 670 is $400, but that's most likely out of the picture.

The OCN marketplace has some good options too depending on where you are buying from:

GTX 570 $215

GTX 580 $325

GTX 560 Ti $185

Get a better card, the gtx670's are a pretty good deal for 400. Though you can pick up a used 7970 for little more and have more performance, just overclock it to 1150 at least so you can match a stock gtx680's turbo speed and enjoy having one of the fastest cards on the planet

you could get another one for sli ( will be between a 560 ti and 570 in term of overall performance )
it would only cost around 120$ for another one so price/performance would be good.

of course if you want more power and futur proof a new card would be better but more expensive too
post #5 of 41
2x 550 ti , is more or less ( hold the pitchforks its just an estimate ) the equivalent of a 570 , maybe a bit more but at the same time has some limitations that come with having sli , if you can afford to buy an upgrade now then do it , that way in a year when you get the itch to upgrade again you can get a second one of this ''upgrade'' and go sli then . if you 2 way or 3 way sli now next time you upgrade you have to start from scratch and lose alot more money.

exactly thats what I meant it future proofs you to upgrade now to about as good as your willing to pay for , especially if you can sell or recycle your 550 somewhere .. sorry about double post ,

its a good point of view. But everthing come down to one simple question; can YOU ( not other people) afford the cost of an new graphic card ?
Cause everyone would suggest like an 670, of course it rock for the price. But its still 400$, so keep in mind your budget ( if possible with shipping + tax so you have a better idea ).

other than that... the 670 rock 0o'

Ok I think I got it thx, I never had a sli setup b4 and was wondering on what would be best. I think i'll go for a new card for myself and the wife can have my old one. Thx alot for the input. Oh and the budget would be $270.00 as that what it would cost for 2.

Thats right same said for surround , if you want to go surround 3 monitors means 2 cards , I just figured the budget didnt include 2 more monitors , not to mention 550ti might have a hard time running surround , only 1GB vram
