[TT] MSI Geforce GTX 680 Lightning Spotted - Page 35

Does the 670 PE use a custom PCB?

A couple full cover water block 670 PE's would be a nifty bang for the buck setup.

Very custom PCB

and

no full cover blocks likely (unless you custom make one of course wink.gif )

In my mind if I was personally considering 2 of the PE or two of the Lightning my choice as is apparent is the Lightning. But when I consider 3 PE or two Lightning for the same price it gets a little tougher ... of course.
Now in some games like BF3 where the scaling is now better even at 1080p and 1200p the thre 670 pe's make more sense but in others not the case hmmm..
The advantages to getting 3 PE's seem apparent ... MUCH higher fps in games that scale well for the same price!!! They also overvolt so they would get more than we are seeing at stock voltage... potentially quite a bit more ...
Some drawbacks are GPU's that are likely not binned nearly as much as the Lightnings ... so it is luck of the draw if you are gonna get stock voltage overclocks of anywhere from low to upper 1200's on top of less cuda cores ... voltage when adjustable will be limited to 1.3v , pretty much zero chance of a full cover block and likely need copper sinks for the ram if using a universal block which takes time and or cash (depending if you already have the copper sinks laying around) and is a bit unsightly with the copper and no backplate...
The advantages of the lightning besides epeen:
Binned GPU gonna get 1300 or higher with stock voltages.
More Cuda cores than the 670
Has the power managment to take the GPU as high as it will go will likely see 1400-1450 on air if fans are on full and I would think 1450 maybe even 1500 with water if you are not scared of the voltages wink.gif.
Still covered from warranty if you kill your card running at higher voltages and speeds.
Will give better performance in games like crysis 2 in sli than 3 way sli PE's at resolutions like 1080p.
Better performance in any games that will not use SLI well.
Likely better resale value or at least easier to find a buyer when the 780's come out wink.gif
Two cards will put less stress on cpu in gaming situations where the cpu is the limiting factor.
Some drawbacks:
When games scale well 3 670 PE's will toast the lightnings in sli (game, resolution and cpu dependent) for basically the same price!!!
Depending on what kind of memory overclocks you get you will see increasingly diminishing returns of performance in most games and benchmarks as you approach and pass the 1400mhz mark
In my case the cost difference between 2 Lightnings and 3 Power Editions is about $100 including next day shipping option and the purchase of a third universal WB for the Power Editions for about $50.
For those sticking to air the Power Edition will be even closer in price, though I am not sure how they will do with back to back PCIE spacing?
Fun fun smile.gif
of course the obvious thing to do then is to get a third Lightning !!!! smile.gif and in saving a hundred with not getting 3 Power editions the Lightning would only be $500 (a real bargain biggrin.gif) anyone like this option?

I was thinking of going 2 lightnings or 2 PEs...3 PEs isn't possible for me, as I only have 2 PCI-E 16x lanes....and also its really not necessary for me to run 3 cards....BF3 runs well above 60fps constant with my two 670s, and I'm 2560x1600 ultra

I honestly think two PE's would suit your needs, if you don't care much for e-peen and benchmarks....

Epeen No but Stereo 3d gaming is rough ... even with a single monitor minimums in BF3 multiplayer or games like Metro can feel choppy around 40-50 fps so staying above that is paramount to me ... so the minimum I would do with a single monitor is SLI Lightnings or classifieds ... 3 PE's would be great as would 3 Lightnings ... if I went back to surround I would have 3-4 Lightnings or more likely classifieds as the Vram is important with that res in the games I play and with stereo 3d and maxed settings the card configurations I consider are FAR FAR FAR from overkill ....

I aim for being as close to 120fps minimums as possible so to keep stereo 3d minimums above 60fps as much as possible...

the other thing about lightnings that are for me (again not epeen) is that I LOVE to tweak and add voltage and measure voltages and temps.... give me some good music and a good beer and I can do that ALL night ... adjusting and checking voltages and measuring the results in testing (not to benchmark but to measure changes in performance) LOL

So at this moment Classifieds being out of my running ... and Lightnings being ordered and almost here is whether 3 PE's are a smarter choice overall for me ... and to pose this question for others to chime in for my and others benefit...

I do of course see and agree that in MOST cases for MOST gamers a pair of PE's is PLENTY!!! especially with voltage control on its way!!!

I am glad that the option which works for you is the lighter one on the pocket!!! and is of little or no compromise to you smile.gif
Did you order them yet? lots in stock at Newegg thumb.gif

So, has anyone actually successfully overvolted these things and checked how high of an overclock is really possible within reasonable conditions?

Sorry if I'm missing something, I haven't really been paying THAT much attention to the last few pages.

Not yet, the voltage control part is being implemented in an upcoming version of afterburner, just waiting for that to be released.

Bummer. Now I need to wait longer.

On the up side of things, that means more time for someone to make a waterblock or for MSI to announce a 4GB version before I invest my money wink.gif

Probably a difference in the ln2 bios as well, lightnings used to have switches on the back for enabling ln2 mode, disabling OCP & all that, now it looks like it is done in the bios. There has to be some difference between the PE & the lightning, guessing the second ln2 bios of the lightning would be it.

Not sure why they have an Ln2 bios switch if theyre going to do a dual bios. Such a small segment of their customers will even use it. It should have been a dual bios to store your overclock so you could switch between normal and overclocked mode, that would be much more useful. There were a few asus cards that have that I believe, cant remember which though.
