[TT] MSI Geforce GTX 680 Lightning Spotted - Page 36

Well, a lot of the HWBOT guys use MSI lightnings, and the card is designed for such things in mind.

If you browse the HWbot GTX 580 rankings, a lot of those ranks are filled with lightnings (the card is designed for world records) and THOSE guys use LN2. Most of the top spots are using 7970 lightnings currently.

Yea, the lightning xtreme was all of the top cards in the world on HWbot for the longest time. Does the 7970 have dual bios too?

The reference 7970 has dual bios I believe, but yes, the 7970 Lightning does as well...

It should have been a dual bios to store your overclock so you could switch between normal and overclocked mode, that would be much more useful. There were a few asus cards that have that I believe, cant remember which though.

I think it is a normal dual bios, the ln2 bios for better cooling. People can still use it but more extreme cooling just gets more out of it, like having all the extra phases.
Or once you have the card you could probably flash something else over it if you want.

The regular lightning was, the extreme wasn't really a record setter.

Well I seem to have an answer!!!

My wife has told me to KEEP the two lightnings and if it is not enough get a third!!! smile.gifsmile.gifbiggrin.gif

I AM VERY EXCITED!!!

PE 670's (3 of em) are a better value ... but I am not after value but awesome fun, my wife reminded me of that!!!

She is HOT and SMART as well , I always feel like a lottery winner smile.gif

I am still up in the air about the cards though ... well I have less than 10 hours to choose ... and the default no choice will be to keep the 2 lightnings and possibly add a third wink.gif

Looking at the scaling in BF3 at 1200p and 1080p res has always shown like NO real difference between the 670 sli or 680 but then I saw some benchmark results that did show a fair difference (nothing drastic) but more like 10fps more rather than the 1 or 2 I had seen before ... before I saw that I was bent on a pair of 670's for BF3 at lease then when I saw some benches with more difference I was like OHHH YEAH there is my excuse ... oops I mean reason for getting some 680's...

But right now I have the darn BF3 results from Linus's video I saw earlier this morning (as in Sunday morning) with quite good scaling of the 670's to 3 way sli , I know I already mentioned that ... and those results are swimming in my head saying why give up performance in BF3 for coolness and overclocking geekdom LOL

I just have to have to hope I can get REAL nice core and memory overclocks with extra voltage for daily gaming ...

any more bits of wisdom at any point in the next 10-14 hours is welcome !!!! (but please no 2 670's is enough .. bla bla bla ... it is not enough with stereo 3d to keep minimums above 60fps wink.gif in the games I play ) That last bit is for anyone jumping into the thread now smile.gif

and HAPPY day to everyone here getting a lighting or two or three or four tomorrow!!! CHEERS and OVERCLOCK .... smile.gif

oh and if no one has seen it the PIXAR Disney movie BRAVE is AWESOME but do see it in stereo 3D thumb.gif

hey supermi, so does it come down to

3 lightnings or 3 PEs?

I know you said you don't want to hear "no 2 670's is enough" talk....the way I see it though

Lightning = putting it under water or LN2 and pushing sick overclocks

Power Edition = you can do what I stated above....but I don't think PE will match the Lightning in terms of OC potential....due to the PCB and non binned GPU....but it can still be a competitor for water guys...thats assuming a block will come out for it

I wasn't aware that you were going to run these in Stereo 3d? I think that changes the whole playing field IMO....2gb of VRAM will probably be a bottleneck, no matter how many cards you throw in there....BF3 ultra at 1920x1080 is around 1.5gb.....I know triple monitor guys are easily above 2gb

I would say shoot for a 4gb card? Single monitor, sure go with 3 PE's IMHO....if you really want to wag that epeen and push the card to it's limits, then go 3 Lightnings.....but I say that 2gb is gonna limit you

Thanks!!!biggrin.gif

It is a popular misconception that stereo 3d takes more vram, it does not it just takes more muscle ... now if I went surround stereo 3d then the vram will come into play... I have heard from a good source not to expect 4gb lightnings (not saying who) but their words were enough for me not to wait for them ... I am not really interested in the classifieds any more so I am thinking I will run with 2gb cards while on a single monitor in stereo and then when I go back to surround sell em and get 4gb cards of some kind (though I do think I will likely wait till the 780's for that cause in reallity even 4 way sli does not acceptably push a game like BF3 completely maxed out in surround stereo 3d at least not any cards currently being sold) that is a big reason I ditched 2 of the monitors for now... if I was not stereo 3d I would say the 670's 2 of em or a single lightning would be sufficient...

In terms of how to look at the PE vs the LIGHTNING I TOTALLY agree with you! thumb.gif I will be putting my cards under universal blocks and shoot for 1500mhz in sli (2 way) see how close to Linus's 3-way sli 670's FPS in BF3 I can ... he had em at 162.6 average and 105 minimums for the 670 3-way (stock) and 126 average and 71 minimums for the 690 (stock) ... if I can get close to his stock 3 way 670's by overvolting and overclocking on water I will be happy!!! if not I think a third is in order (for personal satisfaction) and SMOOTH stereo gaming!!!!! I WANT THE BINNED GPU AND VRM's MADE FOR OVERCLOCKING!!! wink.gif

So there we have it I am going to bed and will accept the package, take the cards, report on em here and put em under H20 (nice cool loop) and OVERCLOCK them TO THE MOON!!!! And since the VRAM won't be an issue with the single monitor I am happy as can be with 2 and perhaps 3 lightnings!!! smile.gif I always have my 720p 3d projector for immersive 135 inch gaming when I need it LOL.

I was coming to this conclusion before I read your post, however reading it did help me solidify that conclusion into a choice smile.gif thanks for posting back so late at night!!! thumb.gif

and for anyone making a similar choice ... thumbsupsmiley.png

1. if you are a tinkerer and LOVE pushing the cards like me get the lighrtnings
2. if you are a gamer and just want fast frames and a good little overclock helped by voltage get some PE's ... 3 of em will wipe the floor with 2 lightnings in scenarios with good scaling.
3. if you run surround monitors as much as it pains me to say it go with a 4 gb model!!! the Classified maybe..
and a related observation/prediction ... from the wispers I have heard there might not be a 4gb lightning ... and if you look at the pcb there is no room for more chips ... so the chips would have to have more density which would likely slow down the card and hurt the lightning as a benching world record card... though I would be happy to eat my words and see a Lightning extreme!!! But I think there is a chance of having 4gb on a PE card ... just look at the spots for memory NOT being used on the 670 PE right next to the spots being used.... that would be a solid choice ... and if available now one I would likely make!!!
4. If you run stereo 3d gaming it does not change your VRAM needs ... those are dependent on the resolutions of your monitor or monitors along with mods and textures in the games you are running
5. Might be a little easier selling the lightnings later on when the 780's arrive but that is not certain.
