I know you said you don't want to hear "no 2 670's is enough" talk....the way I see it though
Lightning = putting it under water or LN2 and pushing sick overclocks
Power Edition = you can do what I stated above....but I don't think PE will match the Lightning in terms of OC potential....due to the PCB and non binned GPU....but it can still be a competitor for water guys...thats assuming a block will come out for it
I wasn't aware that you were going to run these in Stereo 3d? I think that changes the whole playing field IMO....2gb of VRAM will probably be a bottleneck, no matter how many cards you throw in there....BF3 ultra at 1920x1080 is around 1.5gb.....I know triple monitor guys are easily above 2gb
I would say shoot for a 4gb card? Single monitor, sure go with 3 PE's IMHO....if you really want to wag that epeen and push the card to it's limits, then go 3 Lightnings.....but I say that 2gb is gonna limit you
It is a popular misconception that stereo 3d takes more vram, it does not it just takes more muscle ... now if I went surround stereo 3d then the vram will come into play... I have heard from a good source not to expect 4gb lightnings (not saying who) but their words were enough for me not to wait for them ... I am not really interested in the classifieds any more so I am thinking I will run with 2gb cards while on a single monitor in stereo and then when I go back to surround sell em and get 4gb cards of some kind (though I do think I will likely wait till the 780's for that cause in reallity even 4 way sli does not acceptably push a game like BF3 completely maxed out in surround stereo 3d at least not any cards currently being sold) that is a big reason I ditched 2 of the monitors for now... if I was not stereo 3d I would say the 670's 2 of em or a single lightning would be sufficient...
In terms of how to look at the PE vs the LIGHTNING I TOTALLY agree with you!
I will be putting my cards under universal blocks and shoot for 1500mhz in sli (2 way) see how close to Linus's 3-way sli 670's FPS in BF3 I can ... he had em at 162.6 average and 105 minimums for the 670 3-way (stock) and 126 average and 71 minimums for the 690 (stock) ... if I can get close to his stock 3 way 670's by overvolting and overclocking on water I will be happy!!! if not I think a third is in order (for personal satisfaction) and SMOOTH stereo gaming!!!!! I WANT THE BINNED GPU AND VRM's MADE FOR OVERCLOCKING!!!
So there we have it I am going to bed and will accept the package, take the cards, report on em here and put em under H20 (nice cool loop) and OVERCLOCK them TO THE MOON!!!! And since the VRAM won't be an issue with the single monitor I am happy as can be with 2 and perhaps 3 lightnings!!!
I always have my 720p 3d projector for immersive 135 inch gaming when I need it LOL.
I was coming to this conclusion before I read your post, however reading it did help me solidify that conclusion into a choice
thanks for posting back so late at night!!!
and for anyone making a similar choice ...
1. if you are a tinkerer and LOVE pushing the cards like me get the lighrtnings
2. if you are a gamer and just want fast frames and a good little overclock helped by voltage get some PE's ... 3 of em will wipe the floor with 2 lightnings in scenarios with good scaling.
3. if you run surround monitors as much as it pains me to say it go with a 4 gb model!!! the Classified maybe..
and a related observation/prediction ... from the wispers I have heard there might not be a 4gb lightning ... and if you look at the pcb there is no room for more chips ... so the chips would have to have more density which would likely slow down the card and hurt the lightning as a benching world record card... though I would be happy to eat my words and see a Lightning extreme!!! But I think there is a chance of having 4gb on a PE card ... just look at the spots for memory NOT being used on the 670 PE right next to the spots being used.... that would be a solid choice ... and if available now one I would likely make!!!
4. If you run stereo 3d gaming it does not change your VRAM needs ... those are dependent on the resolutions of your monitor or monitors along with mods and textures in the games you are running
5. Might be a little easier selling the lightnings later on when the 780's arrive but that is not certain.Edited by supermi - 6/25/12 at 2:01am
