[TT] MSI Geforce GTX 680 Lightning Spotted - Page 37

supermi,

yeah man np...accept that package tomorrow and let us know how it goes! Btw, I totally mis understood you earlier....I thought you were gaming in 3d and in triple monitor setup...but a single monitor and 3d, that will be okay with 2gb Lightnings thumb.gif

I'm personally waiting for the PE to come out on Amazon (to save on tax)....I saw hammerforge's link to the Lightnings on amazon when they first came out...they were taking pre-orders for $610 shipped a piece....I could have pulled the trigger there....but I stepped back and told myself its literally wasting money....I game at 2560x1600 and I don't care for benchmarks or epeens, and won't be putting it under water....then I found out the PE's will have voltage unlocked as well....I just decided to go with the PE's instead and save myself $360-ish

and one more thing....your wife is amazing allowing you to buy a 3rd lightning if you wanted!! let us know how it goes once you fire them up!

I'd really like to smack nvidia for being retarded. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

You know, gimped memory, gimped bandwidth, gimped voltage control that is giving msi and evga an excuse to play this silly secreative waiting game...

Package is in route to delivery!!!

I usually get packages around 9 am or around Noon so I should have it here fairly early (this is all Pacific time) ... I will work out of the house with a client (most likely) between 11 am and 1 pm ... but my LOVELY wife will stay around the house to wait for my Lightnings if I am out!

I LOVE her!!! helpinghand.gif

I will take pictures and post em!!!

(any one want some 3d video posted on you tube of the cards or at least some 3d photos? LOL (that is my other hobby)

Disclaimer I am a tech NUT , I do not do it for glory but for a need to tinker and sort of look at my own EPEEN once I have overclocked as far as I can and still use it daily!!! But I also LOVE good deals I mean LOVE em ... so choosing between the 2 lightnings and 3 PE's was TORTURE for the past 24 hours ... (though I do console myself in the fact some games like Skyrim will fair better with two cards then three LOL )
But I spent last gen (most of it) with a single reference EVGA 1.5gb 580 which I spend SOOO many hours and ways to try to OC past 920mhz and it never happened it also did not cut it for stereo 3d gaming ... and an i7 920 that I needed to work VERY hard to get to 4ghz ... (I did end up with MANY reference 580 3gb's and a few more I7's one if which did reach 4.4ghz .... and I tried making a sub zero freezer box in my case and then just went water in search of HIGH overclocks and it was just SOOOOO hard....

So this time around I am going with components that I can more joyfully overclock like the Rampage extreme (watercooled) and a nice clocking 3930 and now the lightnings ... and two power supplies so I have NO chance of being power limited ... biggrin.gifrolleyes.gif

In short I am a little crazy this time around and those are the glasses I am looking at my value colored world smile.gif and it is FUN!!!

Supermi, you are incorrect about VRAM. VRAM uses varies depending on the game, but with 3d surround resolutions you can easily pass 2gb. The thing to remember is that presentation stuff (textures) is fairly static however image quality DRAMATICALLY increases VRAM usage - so with 2gb you might be able to get away with FXAA at 5760x1200 in some games or 2XAA but in other games increased MSAA will cause the game to fail. I have seen this and witnessed it myself, VRAM uses exponentially increases with higher IQ / MSAA levels- you can easily go past 2gb in crysis 2 maxed if you up the IQ at 5760x1200.

The size of the backbuffer and intermediate buffers become very significant at higher resolutions. So basically 5760 * 1200 * 4 bytes (per sample) * 8 (samples per pixel) = 221,184,000 bytes per back and front buffer. There is one front buffer and two back buffers, so 663,552,000 bytes just for your frame buffer. Nx AA costs you N * the framebuffer memory. So running 5760x1200 with no AA is only 82,944,000 bytes for the front and back buffers, and only 442M for the G-buffer.

TL'DR: VRAM use depends on game, however AA use at higher resolutions will make VRAM use skyrocket. So 4gb will ensure forward thinking games have the best image quality. Simply put, most people talking about VRAM and how it doesn't make a difference, are idiots. It does make a difference, but only at extreme resolutions and IF you increase the AA levels. Most people speaking on this matter how NFI what they're talking about. Its simple math really. Nx AA costs you N* framebuffer memory.

Do note that VRAM doesn't really matter much for single screen resolutions, 2gb is fine at this point for current games.

Hey xoleras

I am VERY correct about VRAM as are you, we are just talking about different things ...

All I am saying is that STEREO 3d (not surround 3d) renders two images from the same data pool as it would render a single image ... so YES things like AA levels , textures and texture or model mods make HUGE differences... I am definatly on the camp of more VRAM is needed ... I do think 2gb is very boarderline even at 1080p ...

However STEREOSCOPIC 3D does not use ANY more vram (nothing measurable) than non Stereoscopic... perhaps you are confusing the term of Stereo (meaning stereoscopic) with surround (meaning multiple monitors) ???

So let us say you are playing BF3 fully maxed in 120hz NON stereo i.e. 2d and use say 2gb of VRAM and you then turn on the STEREOSCOPIC 3d you will not see a change in VRAM usage ... now if you add some sort of MSAA or change resolutions etc. that will of course GREATLY change it !!!

In surround 4gb is probably enough for the moment so let us say (guessing the numbers in this sentence cause I do not have Skyrim) that Skyrim modded with textures uses 2.9gb ram at 1920*1080p in 2d it will use the same 2.9gb in 3d and at say 5760*1080 uses 3.8gb in 2d it will use the same in 3d ...

3d doubles the demand on the GPU to draw the image twince from slightly different vantage points from the SAME data on the VRAM ... it does not store that data twice!!! and 3d also forces on vsink which in some games like bf3 further hit the FPS which causes the roughly halving in FPS from as an example 105 to 62 ...

If we were in a forum talking to people saying 2gb is PLENTY even at surround resolutions I would be calling that person out with ya thumb.gif
Please point out what part of my post(s) make it sound like I am saying 2gb is plenty for 3 screens so I can refine my work selection wink.gif

And in my case as I wrote in other posts I am on a SINGLE stereo 3d 1080p monitor ... and I wrote if I was going back to three of em I would sell these lightnings for some sort of 4gb card ... wink.gif I even wrote if the PE's were in 4gb flavor I would likely get them over the Lightnings biggrin.gif

I am in the know and on your side in this, always have been thumb.gif

Okay gotcha. I see people stating "VRAM doesn't matter" all the time, but it does but only at extreme levels of resolutions and AA. Guess I just spoke out of turn thumb.gif

GL with the cards later! Hopefully you'll get the golden chip(s) wink.gif
