As it should:
ASUS DirectCU is larger mass, larger heatsink, larger surface area to remove heat. Thus, the fanspeeds would be lower by design and by simple thermodynamics. So what you're saying is correct from a fan noise perspective.
However, I think ASUS made one minor error on the 600-series:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/asus-geforce-gtx-680-msi-radeon-hd7970_2.html#sect1
Two pictures stand out:
390
460
Note the TIM and which heatpipes actually touch the GPU heatspreader.
I'm not an engineer, but the outer two heatpipes don't even TOUCH anything that directly transfers heat. Not even the TIM.

Yes Alex, i know that. And that is the reason i wait for the Lightning card to arrive in my country too. The Lightning has better pcb components, has 2 slots, has a much better cooling solution than Asus DirectCU II, has better temps than the DC2, gpu reactor, more phases, and many more. The Asus people think the DC2 GTX680 is a high-end card ? smile.gif))

Rest of people: Ohhh man, i will pray for the Lightning to arrive sooner, and to buy it biggrin.gif

While a single lost video card is but a miniscule percentage of UPS's daily volume, it represents 100% of what I had scheduled for delivery. I personally know several of the local drivers and even a UPS pilot (who has the same name as I do, small world), so the personal side of things doesn't enter into it. I wouldn't even be a bit perturbed if these cards were readily available, I'd just let the CC company deal with it and order another. Now it's looking like I'll let the CC company deal with it and buy another brand. I also bought a MSI MB, if it makes it then you guys will still get a little of my business.

1322MHZ in SLI tested stable in games, just ran crysis 2 maxed and a very appreciable framerate improvement over 690 (which is expected of course). Also - TIP TO EVERYONE OUT THERE - uninstall precision X! Precision X does not work properly on this card, you *need* MSI afterburner 2.2.2.

Very happy so far. I am using the LN2 BIOS. One thing I noticed is that the GPU clock doesn't jump around like it does on other 680 boards - it goes to 1322 and *stays* there the entire time thumb.gif The LN2 BIOS is a winner, I am very very happy so far. Now onto synthetic benchmarks!

Callsignvega if you're out there, I know the clockrate jumping around bugged you too, I love that the GPU boost clock *sticks* on this card. Also my temps are VERY good, hasn't pass 60c on either card yet...i'm using 70% fan though...

My settings right now are:

+100 voltage
+200 power
+110 GPU = 1322 in SLI
+250 memory

Onto more testing!

Looks good for sure. That's how my 680 behaves as well in terms of the boost number. Can't wait to see the benches. Do a single maybe if you get the chance?

How are the memory overclocks looking on 680 lightnings? Hammer, was the 7000 effective stable for you? The Galaxy SOC will hit 7000 Eff.
Hoping the lightning will also.

I will receive my lightning tomorrow, Hoping for a CHERRY smile.gif

heres my results so far. stopping for tonight to play an actual game.

338

338

1.26 volts as per meh voltmeter. 1346/3499

i might add this is STABLE. it ran for an hour looping heaven at these settings... more to come.
I had a 1352 stable run of heaven in SLI, high manual fan speeds though. At 100% fanspeed the fans are like 4200rpm lol. But there is no hum like i've heard on other coolers, its just moving air and doing a really good job at that! Gotta say these cards met my expectations and passed them, definitely pleased.

Vega, get on the batphone and tell EK to make us some water blocks for these badboys thumb.gif

Tips for other users:

1) Uninstall precision x, it won't work! Get afterburner 2.2..2 or whatever the latest is.
2) Use LN2 BIOS (position to the right I think)
3) GPU reactor doesn't seem to make much of a diff, although I had to take mine off for SLI

What mem oc did you get?

Precision x worked just fine for me might just be your system, perhaps an old version of precision?
