[TT] MSI Geforce GTX 680 Lightning Spotted - Page 50

The 1.265 voltage is in the ln2 bios... I know cuz I'm the one who got that number. In heaven 1.255-1.260 3dmark pulls 1.260-1.270

Also the card I have did 1.22 stock with a voltmeter. Comparing software readout to actual hardware read out is not the same thing.

If those SOC's do get voltage control they will likely have consistently better OC numbers than these lightnings ...

I think you have some incorrect assumptions about binning, also there are many not so flattering OC results for the galaxy card on various other boards.

Not knocking the galaxy, i'm sure its a great card - we'll see if Galaxy will follow through on voltage, so far I haven't been impressed with galaxy support.

To elaborate:

Tier 1 = Lightning
Tier 2 = OC SKU
Tier 3 = default/reference SKU
Tier 4 = "defective", returned to vendor or RMA'd for credit

You test each batch of chip to determine which line you want to put the cards in. After the cards are made, if there is a need to cherry-pick samples, then you test based on the completed cards.

But that adds A LOT OF COST to the card, and at the end of the day consumers won't see much of a difference. There's so much more to this whole process...

If I can get on the livestream and explain it on Saturday at the OC event in Toronto, I will.

I do think I understand that smile.gif.

I was just chiming in that the binning process at Galaxy for their top tier card might be going a little more strictly (or it could just be the small sample set that I have seen between the two cards) or maybe the lightnings are top second level board binning compared to the SOC ?

On the OC:
I am not saying it is bad just not what I was expecting I mean 1300mhz at 1.25V or so is not what I would think of as a very good chip (and that is on a board with clean power compared to other boards ...

I know there will be some variety in the cards and there is a reason that MSI has choosen the base and boost clocks as they did some of the cards will not be stable at 1.175V much past the 1200 mark (as one of my cards is) and others like my other can go over 1300 at 1.175V...

On the Stock BASE and BOOST:

I do realize binning does not garantee any sort of OC over cards stock speeds...

The bases of my statement in the other post was just pointing out that where the base value (expected minimum core speed with stock 1.175V) with the SOC cards (what they ship at)is close to 1300mhz or 100mhz higher than the lightnings and that seems to be noticeable in the overclocks people are getting at their chosen voltages...
(this is all visible when looking at the stock base and boost speeds of the cards (before any OC is applied by the end user))

for example: the SOC ships with a boost speed of 1270 or so and often boosts to about 1300 more or less in actual use and one of my lightnings will not even do 1270 without the LN2 Bios ... boosts to exactly 1176 (sometimes less). Does that not speak of differences in Binning? Or are the Galaxy cards cherry picked samples?

open talk here that is it < I still choose lightnings over the classifieds and SOC and I will stay with my choice>
the lightnings do rock wink.gif

and you are a good REP
any idea when more Lightnings will ship?
I will put my money where my mouth is by buying 1 or 2 more Lightnings !!!!! wink.gif

edit: feel free to let me know if I am still mistaken , I do not want to spread false info and cause you an unnecessary clean up of said misinformation LOL

I'll also back up Xoleras's commitment to buy a couple of Lightnings. I'll pick up 3 of them, if I can get them. I've been holding back since I want to get some 4gb GPUs, but I'll be perfectly fine on the Lightnings. I've been considering getting Classys, but the fact that you can only order one of them without some insane hoops to jump through is a deal-breaker. I'd just love it if the Lightning Extreme came out soon.

I ordered Lightnings because I caught them in stock before the Classified. I'll try them out and I'm sure I'll love them (especially with Afterburner 2.2.3). I may go with the Classifieds and throw a waterblock on them someday. Who knows.

But yeah NCIX did take too many orders mad.gif. Now I have to wait till more are in on Friday before they'll ship.

Yea if only adding voltage to the memory got me better gains. It didn't do much but get me to 7200 but the artifacts were bad so I just stopped. Could maybe squeeze further but meh.

Where is there a voltage option for memory in afterburner?

Edit: You have the galaxy card. NVM sorry ha.
