[TT] MSI Geforce GTX 680 Lightning Spotted - Page 54

Nice nice OC COOL MIKE!!!

so I was on an EVGA forum and I saw this
"MSI reps have said the 4GB Lightning is coming in a month at a 599.99 price point. MSI is discontinuing the reference 680, dropping the twin frozr 680 to 499.99 and making the 2GB 680 lightning around 539.99 "
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?high=&m=1654165&mpage=1#1654466

Alex if you have any insight to share (I ordered 2 more Lightnings today) (also exchanging one faulty one) but would feel shaken with 4gb cards sold for this same price in 4 weeks...

any one else know where this guy got his info? any legitimacy to it?

I was told by someone associated with MSI there will likely be no 4gb lightning, then Alex said he can not comment of course I get it, and now this ???...

Yeah, I read that too (Johnny_Utah on those forums as well). I have NO idea where that guy got his info...it's a bit suspect if you ask me. Until I see a quote from an MSI rep, it's just hot air.

Should I grab one of these or wait for the 4gb lightning, I will be running it on a 30" 2560x1600 is 2gb enough vram?

well at that res it totally depends on the games , texture mods and AA levels ... as well as how long you plan to keep the card ...

as well as whether you can wait and IF they even release a 4gb card...

Yes, let me confirm or deny rumors so everyone on the internet (including EVGA and Gigabyte and ASUS) knows what we're doing (or not doing).....

While I will say what that guy said makes sense from a product positioning point of view, there's a lot of holes (including his lack of cost pricing) from my vantage point...

Plus, I think people are missing the biggest info: A SINGLE 4GB CARD WILL BE SLOWER THAN A 2GB CARD, ALL ELSE EQUAL. This was the case with the 580 Lightning XE, this WILL be the case with any 4GB card vs the same card @ same clock speeds in a 2GB configuration.

If you're gaming as high of a resolution across as many monitors as you can, then you have nothing to worry about. If you're trying to set benchmarks, YOUR SCORE WILL BE LOWER AT THE SAME CLOCK SPEEDS.

Beyond that, continue speculating away...

Well constructed reply!!!

Yeah for benchmarking and fastest fps you can get (as long as you do not need the VRAM for large res or something) the 2gb will be faster and with Kepler being a little memory starved that might be an important consideration for those of us pushing a single monitor!

THANKS ALEX!!!

as for speculating ... they could be making a lightning with double density chips and the memory won't OC as high But I think the current Lightning will stay where it is at $599 or near to and the 4gb would be released at $649 which competes directly in price with the classified but still offers better value as you can OC with software ... smile.gif

At your resolution, you would benefit a little from some current games that can use over 2gb's of Vram. That being said with two cards in SLI you're still only going to have 2gb's of Vram available.
