Honestly with new games like Max Payne 3 that are fully supporting FXAA I'm not too worried so long as the FXAA support stays strong. HardOCP did a really good comparison of 4XMSAA vs FXAA and theres very little difference between the two and FXAA uses quite a bit less vram.

Depending on the games you play, the answer could very well be "no".

As for SLi in the future, that does not solve the VRAM issue. You don't "add" the ram up when you do sli. The total avaliable ram is exactly the same as the ram capacity of the lowest vram capacity card. 2x3 is not 6, it's still just 2. it's even worse when people think they can add a 4gb card in later. 4+2 is not 6 or even 4, its still just 2.

I wouldn't put all my money (so to speak, but also literally) into every game in the next x amount of years that you plan on keeping your card being exactly like a single random example you saw. Never mind that there are already a great number of games that have existed for YEARS that can max out 2GB VRAM on even fairly low AA levels.

2GB is enough for some people in some games. That's today. The future for 2GB looks somewhat bleak.

Agreed. 3GB would have been "enough" for today, and have more future longevity than 2GB. 4GB is still a better solution for high-end solutions of course.

If you still have your 6990 you at least have the luxury of waiting smile.gif

Let's see... if you mod games like say Skyrim or love lots of MSAA the wait for sure!!!

With the density of your screen you might not need as much MSAA as say me on my 27 inch 1080 ...

Also if you do think you will likely upgrade to the 780 or amd 8000 series in say 8-12 months then getting the 2gb in my opinion is not a big deal (some games like ARMA 3 might change that of course)

However if you want to keep this card (and possibly a second) for say 3 years or something then you will likely be happy to have waited for the 4gb in 1-2 years from now.

So I think a lot of it REALLY comes down to the games you play or likely will play and when you think you will next upgrade:)

Another factor is how long you can wait for this upgrade... if your current card is dying or has been sold vs it runs things pretty well does have some bearing ...

Keep in mind that while his higher pixel density means less need for AA, high higher resolution means AA has a exponentially greater effect at any given multiple. 2xAA for him is like 4xAA for you in terms of performance hit, and it only gets worse the more AA you use.

Until we reach the point that AA is entirely unneeded ("retina" like density and ray-tracing in games), increasing resolutions will always be a similar or heavier load than running lower res with more AA. Even then, the ray tracing and ultra-high res needed for said pixel density at large display sizes will require pretty beefy hardware.

I did a similar thing!!! with my 580 ... I have waited like 6 months to have my rig really back together ... and though 4gb temps me ... I do not personally want to put my rig on hold for another month!!! but my screen is only 1080p ...

I can feel the same burn to get a card ... and especially with this card FINALLY releasing!

There are definitely strong opinions about Vram ... i do tend to agree that more is better, but it really is a case by case basis ...

I personally always plan to keep my cards a long time but end up selling them when the new series is released... though this time I WILL at least wait till cards like the Lightning are released ....

Good luck , there are 60 Lightnings currently in stock at the egg so at least they are there and there will hopefully be more shipments in the coming weeks ...

I am sure you will be happy with your choice!!! whatever it may be smile.gif

The 4gb might be seen as an insurance against Vram limitations and that insurance will pay off the longer you keep your card (I know repeating my last post, but it is late LOL )
