Until we reach the point that AA is entirely unneeded ("retina" like density and ray-tracing in games), increasing resolutions will always be a similar or heavier load than running lower res with more AA. Even then, the ray tracing and ultra-high res needed for said pixel density at large display sizes will require pretty beefy hardware.

That is true and a great point Zero4549 smile.gif

That is not how VRAM works. Think of VRAM like hard drive space - having more doesn't speed your PC up but if you run out it will cause a painful systems halt.

Nx AA costs you N * the framebuffer memory. So running 5760x1200 with no AA is only 82,944,000 bytes for the front and back buffers, and only 442M for the G-buffer. So ~520M for the presentation stuff, which leaves 1.5G for textures and characters. The size of the backbuffer and intermediate buffers become very significant at higher resolutions. So basically 5760 * 1200 * 4 bytes (per sample) * 8 (samples per pixel) = 221,184,000 bytes per back and front buffer. There is one front buffer and two back buffers, so 663,552,000 bytes just for your frame buffer.

This means that VRAM usage exponentially increases with higher AA levels, and that multiples in 3d surround resolutions. With 2gb you're limiting yourself to no AA or FXAA at 5760x1200 sometimes, higher AA will cause you to run out of VRAM depending on the game (presentation stuff varies per game in terms of VRAM, some games are fine some aren't)).

For single screen resolutions 2gb is generally FINE unless you go overboard with mods or try to use tons of SGSSAA.

Alex
I am at 1350mhz stable in LN2 mode with nice temps. Give me some additional voltage on the core and I will hit at least 1375Mhz:)

If Nvidia made the gtx680 with 3gb vram, that was pure awesome, imagine a lightning gtx680 with 3gb vram. smile.gif

But i guess this thing will be in the 700 series. Nvidia always put less vram into graphics cards than AMD. I want to wait too for the lightning 4gb version, but i will wait very long time. The 680 lightning will ship in august for me... frown.gif

The reason for the crippled memory (as well as needing a lightning for overvolting in the first place) is because nvidia released a mid-grade card as a high-end this generation.

Simply put, kepler was "so much better" than anything ati was offering, that nvidia just decided to stop working on it early and release it half baked because it was still good enough.

I imagine the next generation of kepler cards will be a big suprise for most users when they actually bring out the real high end cards.
