Power Edition: In caption says you can adjust the voltage as well? It's a 670.

Being able to adjust voltage and being able to adjust that voltage above 1.175v limit are two different things... this card likely does not allow voltage adjustments in excess of 1.175v though there is no definite word on that yet.

I contacted MSI about it and just missed a call from them with the answer mad.gif

I will let you know what they tell me smile.gif

Yeah i'm thinking the power and lightnings will be a clear winner over the classified if that is the case. Voltage control for 200$ less (100$ less MSRP, 100$ less EV Bot.) I don't think it is being released until July though.

Indeed, I am very aware of that...that's why I asked. They make it sound like it's an overclock, hence MORE voltage ,but doesn't say that.

Marketing bull for the win.

I just tried to call them also and left a message. I will post what I hear also.

The Galaxy SOC was purported to let you go past the voltage limit also...and it doesn't (from reading on Hardforum).

Hmm, interesting. I would honestly be surprised if MSI didn't include this functionality, because the lightning brand has always been about world records and overclocking. I hope MSI Alex can chime in here redface.gif

Ok so I talked with MSI and the tech support did not have the answer so the AWESOME tech support guy I was speaking with contacted their HQ which is outside the US for the info and said he will call me within 2 days at the latest ... very likely within a day!!!

So the news is no news for now I should have some news within 2 days but of course we may get some reports from actual users by then...

If anyone has better luck getting the info today , thanks ALOT!!!

Ha HA! Nice work Supermi!!

I will let you know if someone calls me back;)

Otherwise, I will wait for your news.

Strong work Supermi smile.gif Hope you find something out!

They're likely still finalizing all of this stuff, as the release won't happen until Q3 apparently (which is July - retailers are expecting it to hit next month). Like I said I would be very, very, very surprised if the lightning did not accommodate this. Overvoltage/overclocking has been analogous to the Lightning series since day 1.

So it does look like EVGA will be the only game in town for at least a couple of weeks, but here's hoping the MSI lightning is a worthy competetor. MSI hasn't failed me yet.....

Well, nobody called me back. I will anxiously await your info!

On the EVGA forums, Jacob (in not so many words) said that no software could push the 680's past the 1175mV limit. You make the call:

http://www.evga.com/forums/fb.ashx?m=1637755

"@Johnny_Utah:

My point is about voltage control. Remember that all 680's have "voltage control" to an extent. 1175mV is the max allowed via software (and the max that a card may use with GPU boost) "

You can then find my response to that:

"I totally understand that. Every card has voltage control, it has to. My point is that MSI is branding the lightning as unlocked voltage and that voltage can then be controlled via Afterburner.
I mean, look at the Asus DC2 card. There is a simple soldering done, then the voltage is controlled by software running (Asus program). I am not saying that it can only be done with software. My point is that hardmod can be done to the card and then controlled via software. Is this not the case? "

Well let's see:

The msi lighting is being marketed as unlocked and has DUAL a dual BIOS switch which allows for high overclocks of core and mem as well as for being able to cool sub zero without issue ... there MUST be some sort of voltage control in order to make this happen!!! Whether that is on the hardware or software level is the question. The thing is MSI has no separate hardware control device like the OC Panel or EVBOT... and there has been NO glimpse of one being released so I would have to say MSI found or took another approach to the challenge of giving us enough voltage to OC for records. Just cause EVGA and GALAXY and ASUS could not or did not does not mean MSI can not. Though if the price point is really $550 then it is either the best deal in video cards or is an indication that we are paying an extra $50 for vrm's and bling but no real substance... Which is it???

We do have someone suggesting that the Lightning will share the 1.175V limit, but that seems to be Jacob from EVGA who is a DIRECT competitor with a stake in people thinking that and he not likely having access to the details of his competitors card I do take his statement with a LARGE grain of salt!!!

The asus as far as I know allows for a hardware mod that can be controlled from within the BIOS of MB's of the ASUS ROG series like the rampage extreme IV... but not with traditional VGA software like afterburner etc.

From what I was reading in the thread you quoted the Classified might be shipping at under $650 without the EVBOT but if the images suggesting it's stock clocks being in the area of 1400mhz and 4gb ram I would and am REALLY considering getting those and the EVBOT and shooting for 1500mhz under water!!! as the cost of the EVBOT will be spread out between 2 cards it is like paying an extra $50 per a card for the voltage unlock and even without it 1400mhz is OUTSTANDING!

edit: if you look at the pictures in this thread and find the one with GPUZ you can see the stock frequency as 1111mhz ... which is very strange when the EVGA tool is showing a bump of about 54 for a 1454 clock??? one of those is wrong? BUT WHICH IS IT!?

It really is down to these to heavy weights ... one is guaranteed voltage unlocked with additional hardware and the other if software unlocked and really in the $550 range even with only 2gb ram is really unbeatable (assuming the binning of chips for these two cards is relatively equal)

Any body have more info on the LIGHTNING??? smile.gif
