[TT] MSI Geforce GTX 680 Lightning Spotted - Page 71

This is actually normal behaviour for 680 SLI, since for other mortal 680 cards they don't boost evenly. The lightning is the only card that has consistent boosts with a given offset, and it doesn't have kepler throttle either. Anyway, if you want you can run 1 at 1350 and the other at 1300. I saw you mention that you're using auto fan, manual fan as well will help you push further.
Even with all other things being equal these are features that I greatly enjoy. With 680 sli and the 690, kepler throttle constantly sabotaged overclocks and throttled starting at 70C. No such thing with the lightning, which I enjoy wink.gif Also, 100 offset on one lightning is 100 offset on my other (ie, they both run at the same and predictable speeds 100% of the time) All other 680s to my knowledge have completely varying boost clocks depending on chip quality, and it can't be predicted. Just a few perks that I like.
I assume Alex is enjoying his fourth but hopefully he can chime in later this week.

For benches I run one card higher than the other, like 1350 and 1300, and the higher one will have a 95 or 96% load on it the entire, while the lower one will have 99%. So it seems like the faster card is being held back to make up for the speed difference. I don't know, just my observation.

Yes the non-throttling cards are nice, but not yet. My references didn't throttle too often because they rarely hit 70C. These Lightnings never even come close to 70C. Highest I've seen was 62C in SLI at a 1350mhz core on the stock fan profile, so, I won't benefit from non-throttling cards till I can raise the voltage.

So a higher fan speed would give me a higher OC? Even if the card was only at 59C when it ran 3dMark11 at 1372mhz? It's set to hit 55% fan speed at 59C right now, so, 100% fan speed would be a lot cooler. But i figured since 59C is already low, temp wouldn't make much of a difference.

But yeah, like the cards. Whether or not Lightning SLI is worth the extra $200 without voltage control is up for debate. But the one card I got is definitely a winner. Just bumped the core up to 1355mhz and played a hour and a half game in BF3.
But in SLI, I bring the top one's core down to 1295 to match the other's. But again, awesome- yes. Not $200 awesome. These cards are too capable and run too cool to not have voltage control. I'm positive MSI will release a higher max voltage, but it should have been sooner. They've had how long to get one of these to Unwinder before release??

He's a rep, he knows the information he is given. When asked a question he doesn't know the answer to he can relay the question to someone who can answer. Since he is here in North America he likely isn't the guy who deals with sending cards to testers like unwinder half a planet away.
And he is travelling, he was just in TO for the OCN event, when he reads the thread here he will probably have to ask someone else what is happening, all we can do is be patient.

Badgering him would probably just make him want to spend less time on OCN. Look what happened to JFAMD, he was a rep who conveyed the info he was given here to OCN about bulldozer, & was basically hate mailed & chased off because he just didn't know exactly what BD would be like when it released.

While I wouldn't bring JFAMD into it, thats a different type of situation. Anyway, you are correct -- Alex is a MSI rep that doesn't know everything happening everywhere 24/7. He is a mere mortal that likely doesn't know unwinder personally and doesn't deal with him on a 1on1 basis. I do know he is travelling back from Toronto. So posting hate on here is quite frankly, nonsense, agreed with FTW. I'm getting 1352 out of my cards as is and I personally don't give a CRAP about it to be honest, i'm happy where i'm at although voltage control would be nice - I use my PC to play games. Its nice to do benchmarks now and then but its not how I make my paycheck. So I can live without 2.2.3 for a week or two, there's no need to act childish or anything (and i'm not saying anyone is)

At this point the only thing voltage would help me for is benchmarks. Thats nice but ultimately I don't care, I like using them to game mostly - I'd rather play bf3 and the secret world, among other things. 'Sides, 24,200 graphics score in 3dmark 11, I think thats the 2nd highest SLI score in the world. wink.gif Without 2.2.3.

I didn't say anything bad about him. I figured other people might badger him, so I was just curious about whether or not other people have.

24,200 is awesome. I'm just shy of 23,200 myself.

Yeah I hope I didnt come across as being mad at Alex. Not his fault at all. Like others have said I'm sure he just knows whatever someone else tells him. Im sure he has nothing to do with any of the manufacturing and stuff like this is completely out of his control. As they say, dont kill the messenger ha.

He gets put in a very hard situation because he has to take all the grief when the higher ups make mistakes like this. I'm still very pleased with my card. Still the best cards Ive owned. Im just disappointed that I wont be able to get more out of this bad boy till whenever the magical 2.2.3 comes out ha. Still better than a 680 classified imho.

I think I'll enjoy my CF 7970 W/C rig for a few months and by then maybe there will be water blocks and unlocked voltages for the 680 Lightnings, at which point I'll make the switch back to my home team. Team Green! Lol...

Anyone benching 3dMark11 needs to give the new Nvidia beta drivers (304.79) a shot. Up almost 200 points.

My highest graphics score yet, 12417.

Core: 1333
Mem: 7100 effective

Maybe its related to their new motherboard, the M-Power? Maybe msi will go like what evga did back then when you can change the voltages in the Eleet software?

All i know is that they will not lie, maybe their plans just got delayed, duo to 7970 ghz edition maybe.
