However I do want one!

If you sell a 580 at the right time you can get $350 on a good day, put $150 on top of that and you have a next gen GPU with +25% extra performance. It's not that bad. Keeping an old card for a very long time is depressing and prices will even drop harder once not many people want it anymore... I mean used 480s are like $180 now?

Having 50mV more voltage doesn't mean crap when i'm playing the secret world, it might make a difference for 3dmark but honestly, anyone living for that stuff needs to go outside and get some fresh air. Just enjoy your games;) It is coming for sure.

"Stammer like a child", who are you referring to?

I have a 680 DC II, soldered with any voltage I'd like, and I'm not scared of any warranty BS thanks to some info I received from Asus customer service before I modded it. Anyway, plenty of people bought the Lightning, or 670 Power Edition, expecting software controllable voltage. Those owners are stammering like children over complaints that their product still doesn't work as advertised? You think it's okay to sell a product advertising features which still don't work? Sorry but that sounds like blind brand loyalty. Who cares if it's 50 MHz, or 1 MHz, or 200 MHz, that's not the point. It's the simple fact of buying a specific product because it has the feature(s) you want, that no other card on the market can offer, only to find out it doesn't work, and the company took their sweet ass time providing the only person who can make it happen with the card. Meh.

hey mastermind, ive been following this thread and your comments here. i too have a asus 680 directcu and ive been thinking of going with a MVE and doing a hotwire mod. is it difficult to do? i mean, if i can safely and easily change the volts on my asus 680, i might not sell it and get a 680 lightning.

It was very easy. If you know how to solder, you're good. Does your board support VGA Hotwire? If so, it's even easier, because then you don't have to worry about monitoring with a multimeter and changing volts with variable resistors. You can check my thread here for what I did.

May I ask what this info was? Like did you get them to say it doesn't void the warranty or something along those lines?

thanks mastermind. ive actually seen your thread before, but was not thinking of volt modding it the way you did, but with asus hotwire when and if i get my maximus V extreme. ive soldered once, years ago, and i dont remember it being difficult, but im sure i need practice. im just waiting for 2.2.3 to come out, some proper lightning overclock figures, and MVE on shelves, then i can make a decision. thanks though for your info though smile.gif

Yes, it was along the lines of unless I physically damage the PCB with soldering, warranty should still be honored. He didn't guarantee me anything obviously and wouldn't tell me specifically what damaging the PCB with soldering meant (I'm assuming bad soldering leading to shorts or physically damaging surface components), but at least I have something going for me in case anything happens. My question to them was "if I use this card in conjunction with an Asus RIVE for the VGA Hotwire feature, will I be completely out of a warranty even though I'm using your equipment and advertised features?" I guess we'll see if anything actually happens though, because he was just a customer service rep.

Either way it's not a big deal to me, but of course this is at your own discretion because it's easy to blow the card up if you don't know what you're doing wink.gif That being said, the mod was very easy.

Yea if the Lightning had been out already with software voltage control, that card would've been the obvious choice for me. You always run a risk when you start hard modding your hardware.

I did read over at guru3d that MSI did ship him a card, but it was an engineering sample & he couldn't get it working right for the development. Hopefully he gets the retail card soon & can git r dun.

How does a thread about a gpu everyone and their mother already knew was coming get 82 pages?

Edit: Scratch that, I just started page 83.
