That doesn't make sense...there are games out now that use more than 2gb of vram on 1920x1200/1080...not to mention that you might want to use the card for more the just current generation games. Have fun turning down AA now and turning it off in the future.

The correct word would be "allocate". You don't really know much vram a game needs unless you have too little....so unless you can test games with the same card and go down from 4gb vram in like .25gb increments until you hit a vram wall you don't know how much vram the game actually needs.

I know when vram maxes out and a game instantly crashes that more memory is needed. Moreover, I've had two different 7970s and numerous games used well over 2gb vram...especially on 2560x1600 not to mention 4960x1600. 2gb of vram is barely enough vram for current gen games maxed out at 1080/1200. It is not enough for 2560x1600 and definitely not enough for 4960x1600.

Don't get me wrong, the gtx680 lightning looks awesome and I want one...just with 4gb vram.

Benchmark numbers are almost always from canned benchmark or very short sessions of single player play...which are not representative of and don't stress cards or vram nearly as much as extended real world play. Most of the review sites overtly state this in their own reviews/benchmarks. BF3 multi-player and Skyrim with mods are two good examples.

If you think you can you can play multiplayer BF3 on ultra or Skyrim with mods across three screens, even one 30 inch screen, and not require more then 2gb of vram then you simply have never tried it.

EDIT: I really don't want to sidetrack this thread...i just want a 680 lightning with 4gb of ram because I know if I SLI two 680 with 2gb vram the vram will be a significantly limiting factor at the resolutions I use. I've only been responding to those that responded to my initial statement..."If it only had 4gb of ram" which is a fair, reasonable and logical request.

You know why it's 2GB? Because you high rez/ multi monitor junkies are a minority. You guys come last...
So there!
I cant wait till payday! 1350 core here I come

i hope you get one that does 1350. some of them do, but many don't. Don't want you to get your hopes up and your mind set on 1350 only to get a card that does 1320 thumb.gif

This is an interesting article that shows the 680GTX 2GB beating the 7970 3GB consistently at 2560x1600: http://www.techspot.com/review/550-best-gaming-graphics-cards/

Just ordered my 680 lightning today , it was a bit pricey but I am excited as it's my first real top end card. I currently have an Evga 670 vanilla.
My question is , do you think my I7 920 will bottleneck this lightning card? I am currently running it at 3.98 mhz but this processor is 3 years old already.

Because the 680 is a faster gpu then the 7970...not because of the amount of vram.
They use 60 seconds of single player gameplay to establish those numbers, no multiplayer, no mods. It takes >60 seconds for vram to completely load/stablize in most games, not to mention cpu load and temperatures.

Did I say anything about vram in my post? OCD much? I could care less about vram, I'm maxing my games with 1.28gb @ 1080p.

But if you insist: http://www.guru3d.com/article/palit-geforce-gtx-680-4gb-jetstream-review/1
"The 4GB -- Realistically there was not one game that we tested that could benefit from the two extra GB's of graphics memory. Even at 2560x1600 (which is a massive 4 Mpixels resolution) there was just no measurable difference."

MOAR BENCHMARKS guys =D Let's see some fraps benchmarks in multiplayer games, I am curious to see min and average FPS at 1300Mhz+ clocks please

Ask and thou shall receive thumb.gif I will in a little bit. Head to the Owner's thread for some average clocks if you want though in the mean time. The lowest stable+confirmed 3dMark11 clock of all 10 owners is over 1300mhz smile.gif Mine does 1380mhz. 1374/7000 with a memory OC. FTW 420's core does 1383.
