Wifi adapter headaches

Thread Starter
I have an Asus PCE-N15 b/g/n with the latest drivers off the Asus site and it seems to be limited to ~350kbps download speeds in linux. According to the iw utility the connection is at 144.4Mbps which is what it runs at in Windows at full speed but the speed is gimped for some reason and I just can't figure it out. The iw documentation page says "If you need to connect to an AP with WPA or WPA2 encryption requirements then you must use wpa_supplicant." Great. So I d/l the tarball for that just to find out there's a huge freaking exhaustive config file that needs to be made before it can be built.

Before I start digging into all this I just want to make sure that I'm heading in the right direction to begin with, because some things don't seem to add up. According to all the documentation, I won't get >54Mbps without wpa_supplicant installed to handle the proper encryption protocols but the iw utility is telling me I'm already connected at 144Mbps. Despite that, I'm not even getting 54Mbps speeds. Is something else the issue?

The wpa_supplicant thing doesn't make any sense. I have never had to use such a thing when I used Ubuntu on my computers. Also what is the "iw" utlity? It could be a router issue. Just try resetting your router and see if anything changes.

That's odd, Speedtest suddenly gives me 30Mbps down on both OS...

*verifies with other high-speed servers*

...so... now I apparently have... full speed... which is an act of magic, because I didn't change or update anything since this issue started. Confusion really has me now

How did you test speeds before? If it was just from downloading a file then that coul dbe hit or miss. Some sites throttle their speeds and some don't. And then there's how many people are downloading at once, even if it isn't throttled it'll bottleneck the speeds with too many people on at once.

And wpa_supplicant should be on your system by default, pretty much a prerequisite for any wireless tools that you could install

Keep in mind, the speeds reported by Linux and Windows arent accurate, they are connection speeds, not actual speeds.
My connection is set to run at a full 300mbps, and windows tells me that is my speed.
However, my actual throughput is FAR below that.

It may just be a simple case of you looking for one thing, and your OS showing you another.

 you're right, it is. I should have realized that, I feel like an idiot now. So it looks like it's using CCMP which is supposed to be the encryption scheme that correlates to high bandwidth n. The router can do 300Mbps, the adapter cannot.

@PhilWrir: I'm aware that my broadband connection maxes out at 30Mbits/s not 30MBytes/s but the issue was getting ~350kbytes/s down speeds from high-speed servers and web pages in linux when a few moments before I was in Windows using the very same internet connection and very same servers but with the speed I usually get from them (~2-3MB/s).

Well... everything seems to be working well now. I installed the Realtek drivers instead of the Asus ones, they seem to be the same but I guess if everything stays working then something good happened
