First Computer Build, advice would be much appreciated

Thread Starter
Hey,

First off, as stated in the thread title, this is my first computer build. Im not completely new to the pc building scene however and have helped friends and other family members put systems together, however I never had an input into the actual system design, so as such I am calling this my first computer build.

I will be using this a multipurpose machine to supplement the laptop that I currently use for study. (it is getting old and not as powerful as i would like).
However another main usuage of this machine will be gaming, in particular, Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2.
- I am not looking to run those games at 'Ultra" graphics settings as I am more then happy with the graphics at low-medium settings.

I will initially will not be overclocking my system, so have not included a aftermarket CPU heatsink, however if required I was looking at either the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler or the Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler, although the latter will require some reconfiguring of the dominator memory that I am aiming to use.

Without further ado...
- Budget of roughly 1300-1400 Australian dollars. The parts will be purchased from the 'PC Case Gear online store' as their warehouse in Melbourne is a 25 minute drive from where I live.

CASE: Antec P280 or the Corsair 550d,
- Im not really worried about a side window, although it would be interesting, however it is not as much of an issue for me as my PC will be mounted underneath my desk, wihin a dedicated compartment.

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K

MOBO: ASRock Z77 Extreme 6 Motherboard

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560 1gb OC

- was considering a AMD/Ati card, however, the lack of Physx compatabilty makes me apprehensive towards that route, I understand that generally dollar-for-dollar the nvidia cards are generally more power hungry.

PSU: Corsair HX-650 Power Supply

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 500 gb

- I will using a SSD for my boot drive as well as main applications so less is needed, I also own a 2 TB external hardrive which carries the majority of my media, so I dont have any signiificant need for a large internal HDD.

SSD: Crucial M4 128 gb
- was considering either the M4, the corsair Force GT or Vertex 3

ODD: Lite-On 24x DVDRW
- Bluray is not important for this system as I already own a bluray player and use that with a larger LED screen

RAM: Corsair Dominator 4 gb (2 x 2 gb) DDR3

All of these components add up to approx 1400, I have not included any peripherals as I already own these, and I also already have a 64bit Windows 7 Professional DVD as well as Microsoft Office 2010.

Any comments welcome, as I said before, this is my first system design so I would very appreciate some feedback from those more knowledgable then me... (in this case, pretty much everybody) smile.gif

Regards
- Mitch

nice build, you can downgrade the case to corsair 300R & the savings get a cpu cooler like the cm hyper 212+/evo in the build

change the ram to 8GB (2 x4GB) 1600, 1.5v CL9

by the way its the nvidia videocard are the power hungry ones not the ati/amd videocards

Thanks for the input xnuw, sorry, ill edit the main post...

KyadCK, thanks for that build, liking it a lot.
-Will definetly look into it. much appreciated.

Although, from the build you posted, I'd be interested to see if there could be bottle necking with that motherboard/cpu?

Here is the build in an easier format for others.

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K

MOBO: ASRock Z77 Extreme6 Motherboard

CPU COOLER: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler

GPU: HIS Radeon HD7950 3GB

SSD: Crucial M4 SSD 64GB

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB ST500DM002

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (2x4GB) DDR3

PSU; Corsair HX-650 Power Supply

ODD: Samsung SH-222BB SATA DVDRW Drive OEM

CASE: Thermaltake Black Commander MS-III Mid Tower Case

Does anyone also have any information about the differences between different GPU's of the same chipset, such as the difference between Gigabyte HD7950 vs MSI vs HIS? is it just the heat sink and fans that is different? or do other things change as well?

Regards
-Mitch

ok, instead of 7950, go get the gtx 670, never mind me saying about that power hungry one, as this new nvidia cards gettting power sufficient with better driver support at same price range and better yet has extra performance

Na, a 3570K won't bottleneck a HD7950. In fact, you could get a second 7950 down the line, OC your CPU a bit and still be good to go. thumb.gif

While HIS is not the "best" brand for ATI, (that would be arguably Sapphire), I don't hear bad things about them either, it should be fine.

I was thinking that exact thing... Untill I saw the 670s were $500 and the 7950s were $440.

@OP: if you can spare that extra $60, go for the 670.

Ok, how about this build

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K

CPU cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler

MOBO: ASRock Z77 Extreme6 Motherboard

RAM: G.Skill Ares F3-1866C9D-8GAB 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 570HD Superclocked [012-P3-1573-KR]

PSU: Corsair HX-650 Power Supply

SSD: Crucial M4 SSD 128GB

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB ST500DM002

ODD: Samsung SH-222BB SATA DVDRW Drive OEM

CASE: Thermaltake Black Commander MS-III Mid Tower Case

The reasoning for staying with the 128 gb SSD is that in a large number of the tests done that I have seen, the 64 gb versions have had quite significant decreases in performance,

What do people think now?
