They still make noises when you're using them, but they're fairly quiet when idle. No piezoelectric head, so slower and quieter seeks. Performance isn't great compared to a RE4, but depending on your usage that might not matter.

Reliability..? You might want to turn off head parking with the WDIDLE3 tool if you get one. Otherwise they can kill themselves within a few years.

Or you could look into Achilee5's suggestion and play with AAM on your current drive.

Maaan... You made me go through dozens of topics which I definetely do not regret but what I'm thinking right now is - is it ok to use RE4 as a desktop drive alone? If you have any information, please leave your comment here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1267434/wd-re4-desktop-use-in-non-raid-bad

Back to this sound, so it looks like the sound is emitted after hdd is parking heads, right? So, if I'll go disabling APM, will it shorten lifespan of HDD? And the most important question would be - will it "cure" the annoying sound?

I don't believe RE4 drives ever park their heads. A seek to a new location on the platter is probably the culprit.

APM?

AAM changes the seek speed to be less noisy. It increases access times, but it should drop the noise levels a bit... experiment and see if you like it.
