SMART status BAD, backup and replace HELP needed

I'VE got a 1tb samsung drive ive only ever used it for a backup drive but my motherboard keeps giving me this message
SMART status BAD, backup and replace,
what can i do ? ive not used the drive much otherthen keeping backups on it, so i dont understand why i get the error

is it possible to fix?

Fix it? Depends on what's wrong!

First try replacing the cable.

Then start Googling about fixing HDD's - it ain't easy!

Time to put in an RMA with Samsung if it's still under warranty. Other than that, back up your stuff asap or buy another drive.

Drives can go bad for any number of reasons. Manufacturing defects, getting bumped/dropped, overuse, etc. - they pretty much all come down to "Luck of the draw".

Grab Defraggler or HDTune and check the SMART/Health info. Post a screenshot. That should tell us for sure if it's on its way out.

Hey guys. I'm having the same trouble with a PC I was working on. I was using a liveCD and it had trouble shutting down. So I did a hard-reset and when I tried to turn it back on it gave me the same error: S.M.A.R.T.status BAD, backup and replace

I used CrystalDiskInfo and this is what it shows:

What can I do to repair or salvage something? I can't view much from Windows Explorer so I can't copy or clone it. I appreciate any help you guys can give.

Wouldn't worry about it. From my understanding, once you get any number of "Relocated Sector Counts" it never goes away.

For example, lets say a bad cable caused 2,000 RSC errors and you fixed the cable. The drive would still show as Bad or Caution because the RSC count never resets.

Here's a prime example on one of my personal drives, which happens to be the same drive as yours.

Just to be on the safe side tho, run some tests to make sure its nothing serious.

2047 reallocated sectors is a large number of them and almost certainly implies a serious physical problem with the drive. I would back up your data and RMA the drive ASAP, it's likely going to fail soon.

Reallocated sectors cant be caused by bad cables or the like, and only a handful of soft errors can produce them. They are almost always indicative of damage to the physical platters.

the Reallocated Sector Count

Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.

thus its an indication of the drive dying and i would get as much data of it as possible ASAP and replace or RMA the drive as mentioned above they indicate damage to the physical platters

You're thinking about UDMA CRC errors. Reallocated sectors are serious business. That drive might keel over dead at any moment.

Just to be on the safe side tho, run some tests to make sure its nothing serious.
Your drive has 7. That could be an imperfect sealing process, resulting in specs of dust landing on the platter.

His drive has 2047...

Hook it up to another PC as a secondary drive, then try to copy stuff off.

How familiar are you with Linux? ddrescue can go over the drive and clone it to a good one - even drives in a very bad state. If you have a second identical drive onhand, you might want try that before it gets worse.
