If you could go without a DVD-drive, either of these 2 would suffice (2nd one is much faster of course, but the first will do everything you'd need it for) http://www.amazon.com/U32U-ES21-Ultra-Portable-13-3-Inch-Laptop-Silver/dp/B00713DPM4/ref=sr_1_58?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1339020372&sr=1-58
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-U31SG-AS31-13-3-Inch-Laptop-Black/dp/B00713CSWM/ref=sr_1_53?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1339020685&sr=1-53

Otherwise, this Toshiba R845 ($575) would be perfect. Weighs 4.2 pounds (just 0.2 pounds over the 13" Asus models), 14" screen, 8 hours of battery life (one of the longest battery lives as tested by Laptopmag; beat out the Macbook Pro 13 by far), magnesium-alloy chassis, and it has a DVD-burner. Not sold directly from Amazon (its one of the best-selling laptops on Amazon.com - so Amazon is probably sold out), but Amazon resellers are pretty reputable IMO. http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Satellite-R845-S80/dp/B005FXXBBC

Dell Inspiron 14z is a decent choice, step above "basic laptop" and a step or 2 below the Asus U-series and the R845. Slightly lighter than a typical 14", above average battery life. http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i14Z-1424BK-14-Inch-Diamond/dp/B006LX2IWS/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1339022739&sr=1-2

Other options being, "basic" 13-14" laptops. Any sort of basic 13-14" laptop will get you about 5, maybe 6 hours of battery life. Nothing is really special about this category, so no suggestion.
