Got a budget of 250-300 on new headphones, been looking at alot of overclock posts. Just wanted to check and see if the Denon AH-D2000's would be my best option. Any thing else i should consider? I have a pair of AT A700's and am just looking to upgrade.
For the price range the D2000s are pretty much can't-miss. Interestingly enough, I also had the A700s for a while before upgrading to the D2000s (with a Sennheiser HD555 layover in between), and I couldn't be happier. I consider these Denons my destination cans. Well, unless the missus allows me to get the D5000 or D7000.
In terms of sound quality, you'll probably find a them good step up in bass quality and quantity and as good or better with mids and highs--and the Denons are quite a bit more sturdy and comfortable, too. Compared to the Audio Technicas they'll feel downright luxurious.
I know the drivers in the D2000's are the same as the D5000's. Just different housing, I was thinking the same thing almost was about to get the 5000's but then figured it would be better to get the D2000's then amp them with a O2 or MKIII. Do you have an amp?
Was also looking in to the Senn 650's, just think the Denons would be a better option. Do you think $250 is a good solid price for the D2000's?
Yep, I run them perfectly well through my STX without the need for another external amplifier. They could run pretty well even without an amp but of course the sound benefits from having one. Paired with an mkIII or a fiio amp they do great. Even though they're 25-ohm phones, they aren't as easy to drive as my Senn HD555s, but they also have no trouble running straight from an iPhone or portable source.
Definitely better if you have an amp--even a portable or cheap one--yet still sound good if you don't have one yet. I think the Denons would be the better option, too. $250 is a solid price for them new especially since they're not being manufactured anymore and there's every reason to believe the price will go up before it ever goes down. I paid the same price here in Japan recently.
The Sennheiser 650 have a great reputation and I listened to them at a couple stores. They sound pretty good. But they're open cans which mean they bleed out sound pretty easily.
Did a bit more reading and looking around, I think I'm going to buy the Beyerdynamic DT 990's instead.
Mostly because the cheapest venue for the Denon's is to call J&R and get a discount....but they're backordered at J&R right now
However, if my STX can't drive them properly...I'll probably return them and get the Denon's
Just a few perks made me lean toward the Beyerdynamics. 1 cord vs 2--since I use a clip on mic and the Denon's cables look fairly low thickness, I did not want to lose this feature. Warranty is 2 years on the Beyerdynamics, only thing I could find for the Denon's was 1 year. And...finally because my 595's have left me a bit bass deprived the past few years. The Beyers (apparently) deliver quite well in that dept.
The Beyers are definitely excellent with bass. When I compared them side-by-side with the D2000s though I found the treble to give me fatigue after very short listening periods. I had the Senn HD555s modded to 595s and I know what you mean, the bass is really light. The D2000s have very nice bass whereas the Beyer 990s have somewhat overemphasized bass--great for bassheads. Also, the cable on the Denon is very thick, but yeah they do use 1 cord from each phone which come together into the one very thick one about 2 feet from the phones.
As RallyMaster (and I in my post before said), the Denons have been discontinued so most likely when they say they're on backorder they mean they won't be getting any more in.
Your STX will be able to drive even the 600-ohm Beyers, so no worries there
Wish i could find a cheap MKIII, they seem to run about 300 bucks used. Are they not made anymore?
What do you guys think about the Hi-Fi Man HF2A and the O2 amp? What other amps/DAC's would you recommend?
By MKIII, do you mean a Little Dot? I actually have a Little Dot MKII that I have sitting around that I barely use...
Also, tube amps are better paired with high impedance headphones. You'll find that they can change lower impedance headphones' frequency response a bit.
I haven't tried the Hi-Fi Man or O2 but they have good reputations. I'd also check out the Fiio amps like the e7 or e9 as they are very good and cheaper depending on the model.
There's a new line of Denons coming out soon, you can see a little information with pictures here. The D7000 has a direct sequel, the D7100 Artisan, but the replacement for the D2000 is still somewhat in question.
Broke down today and passed on the D2000's for a pair of D5000's. Found them for 320 used, and couldnt pass the deal up! Time to save for the Amp.
