AMD FX 8120 Peak temps at 66C at stock clock with Coolermaster Hyper TX3 !!!

Hey. I have an issue.

I have an amd fx 8120 which I haven't even OC'ed yet. I can run prime95 max heat with a max peak temp about 58C and it will stay pretty stable around 46C.

Thinking everything was good I started playing dota, that maxes out the voltage and clock on my CPU, and the core is stable at high load on about 56-58C, the problem is sometimes there will be brief spikes which go up to 66C for a second!!! I get so anxious seeing this, I haven't even OC'ed and I've even replaced the stock heatsink with a Coolermaster Hyper TX3, it's hot to the touch when it's reaching those ~60 temps, so I think it is cooling good, but what on earth is going on. How can it be so hot simply at stock settings with an aftermarket cooler. Thinking i needed to reseat I did so, and I'll show u the befor and after pics

700
700

so I cleaned it up, and reapplied paste in what way I'd read most efficient yesterday

359

but I still see those sick spikes at about 66C for a second. I made a recording of the temp flucts from playing Dota, you can have a look at it too:

What can I do, and what is causing those nasty spikes? Are they normal, or do I need to worry?

I dont have a FX proc, so I dont know if thats "normal" or not but I would assume it isnt.

The pictures make it look like the paste was applied correctly (could use a little more spreading, but it works).

The fact that the heatsink feels hot to the touch also confirms the above.

The only thing I can think of is perhaps your fan settings are off in the BIOS. Did you have it set so the fan is autmatically controlled? Also, is the airflow in your case good?

Also, a sidenote, 66*C isnt that bad. If you are hitting that at load, thats pretty good for most stock coolers and some crappy aftermarket ones. Although, I do agree that your cooler should be doing a better job. thumb.gif

Thin layer of paste on most of CPU. Make sure that the cooler fan ramps up accordingly with temps, either in bios(already mentioned) or with a program that controls the fan speed. How is the airflow in your case?

My highest under load is 55C.

WAY too much thermal paste bro

You should use half that much or less

It's scaring cause the FX states 61C max. I mean it's not a stable 66, next second it will be 57, but it's a brief 66C, and why can that 66C even occur?

U sure, I followed this guid with this pic: http://www.google.dk/imgres?start=145&um=1&hl=da&newwindow=1&safe=off&sa=N&biw=1680&bih=913&tbm=isch&tbnid=X1hjzhwgQYdgMM:&imgrefurl=http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php%3Foption%3Dcom_content%26task%3Dview%26id%3D170%26Itemid%3D38%26limit%3D1%26limitstart%3D5&docid=ON_5r0oCI8aptM&imgurl=http://benchmarkreviews.com/images/articles/Best_Thermal_Paste_Application_Methods/HDT_TIM_Application_Two_Lines.jpg&w=600&h=450&ei=HtXPT5ikGYrRtAbVyvGjCw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=282&sig=108563357539417831147&page=4&tbnh=137&tbnw=183&ndsp=50&ved=1t:429,r:23,s:145,i:228&tx=66&ty=98 that described pretty optimal spread and amount, do I have much more than that?

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I'm just thinking: Would the heatsink still be hot if I'd used to much thermal paste?

My highest under load is 55C.

The fan does regulate itself up and down, as I said it's not a stable 66C so it doesn't really need to bump the RPMs up way high, but it's a weird spike to me.

The case airflow is horrendous, but I took the side off

The spike may be due to the "Turbo Core" feature, which ramps up clock speed according to load(3.1 to 3.4), and this could also cause a voltage spike. Thus a sharp rise in temp for a second or so.

there should be termal paste on the whole surface(from what other poster mentionned here an X applied termal paste is best!
if you still have temp issue!then maybe the sensor are off !so you might need a precise termal gun to mesure on that small a surface (someone might suggest a brand because you cant take a temp gun that mesure a 6 inch area lol)

The TX3 is hardly adequate for an 8 core cpu, even with a perfect TIM application it is going to run hot.
