Soon to be a IT student - Page 2

Hello! I'm a new here smile.gif. Anyway, I have read this post just now and I'll be a IT student too(next school yr).

I'll just ask a question, how about if a student uses a windows 8 in IT course or if a person uses a tablet that have a win 8 OS, is it ok to use it?

IT has an operations and development side. Supporting networks/systems and users fall on the operations side. Creating apps, web or otherwise, fall in the dev side. Either way a laptop will be what you want. Look at your curriculum and see what the requirements are.

I didn't even own a laptop when I got my BS degree.

All I did was read textbooks, perform labs and take tests.

What "IT" courses will this be needed for? At the university I go to there is no need for one (any computer - they have labs for that) in CS or CompTech (formerly and since degraded IT). Taking notes and reading books is about the best a tablet can do. Don't get it for programming unless you are programming apps for said tablet on another computer. Data entry sucks when you don't have a keyboard and math/sci notes are best kept on paper.

OP if you're going to take programming classes and $200 is your budget get a used laptop or netbook. With that being said, I hope you don't need to load Eclipse (for the obvious reason & because novice programmers should start off with notepad++, DrJava (for java), and etc - IDE's are another learning curve).

I can type fast, I can type with out looking, while talking, blitzed, but I still use pencil and paper even for core classes - and definitely recommend them even if your notes are lines of code.. can't really draw arrows or side notes easily as you can move the lead over 2".

I am currently enrolled in Information Technology and Developer classes and I use a Acer 7740 I rebuilt from spare parts. I own a Kindle Fire to play with, Motorola Atrix for communication, some video, and gaming. I find a use for all of them except the tablet which I only use around the house. If I had more money I would have more toys; but mostly I use my lappy for papers, office, and writing programs. Powerful enough to do the job as I run dual boot Win 7/ Linux so I am well rounded.

In my experience with IT both professionally and as a student, a tablet is a waste of money unless you also have a laptop.

A tablet will be good for taking notes, but will be almost completely useless for any of the applied learning you will do.
Networking and scripting is king in IT, and a tablet wont really allow you to do or learn those things effectively.

Just get a laptop, then get the tablet later for shiggles.
