[Tom's] MarketWatch Slams Windows 8, Calls it Unmitigated Disaster

Quote:
John Dvorak from MarketWatch recently uploaded his review of the current Windows 8 Release Preview, calling the upcoming OS an "unmitigated disaster" that could possibly hurt the company and its future as an OS provider. While this opinion may sound a little harsh regarding an operating system still baking in the oven, many of his comments echo remarks made by other journalists in their hands-on reviews, past and present.

Dvorak is an entertaining guy at times, but let's not forgot his track record concerning his "predictions."

Which is...?

Quite frankly, I agree with him. This is going to be another Vista, if not worse.

Companies hardly adopted Vista, imagine Windows 8.

I don't think these review sites are really spending enough time using Windows 8 as there main desktop OS. I can say that after a week of using it on both my home desktop and work desktop, I can begin to see the changes that Microsoft has made and why they have done so. Once I get passed the learning curve of the Metro start menu It becomes very easy to navigate around the Os and organize my applications in a easy to get to manner.

The one thing people NEED to understand is that Metro is just a start menu that happens to take up the entire screen. Using Windows 8 on a desktop is still as easy as using Windows 7 if not better in my opinion!

I do also enjoy some of the Microsoft Metro apps. I can't wait to see what third part Devs come up with!

Honestly that article is just ridiculous......

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

As a developer, Metro is a spit in the face. I want efficient, not pretty. I also want a desktop experience when I'm working, not a universal tablet-friendly mess.

They need to take Metro and bundle it with a tablet/mobile version of Windows or just have it as an addon that anyone with Windows 8 can download, but have it pre-installed on mobile/tablet PCs.

.. but this has been said a billion times tongue.gif

PS- It's sad how some people flock to "new" and defend it. Just because it's new does not make it better. These people are probably the same people that can watch a terrible movie and give it a great review, they don't know bad from good.

From a user stand point, I've found that it is pretty efficient, and productivity seems to have increased a bit for me. From a Dev stand point, I cannot comment.

Honestly that article is just ridiculous......

As part of my job, I was tasked to review Windows 8 for the company I work for. After an entire week of only using Windows 8, I became so frustrated with the forced fullscreen apps and metro "start menu," I seriously wanted to throw my computer across the room. Why the hell can't I just view a list of apps in a small window? Why does everything have to be a fullscreen endeavor?!

Then I started thinking about trying to deploy this to my users, and died a little inside. I cannot fathom the complete retraining of employees deploying Windows 8 would require.

They even did this nonsense to the Server version. Don't even get me started on using Windows 8 in a VM environment... :::Chills:::

I don't want simple menus with five buttons to take up 1/3 of the screen either!

I don't care how revolutionary or trendy you think you are being, you do not make this dramatic of a change on a core piece of software, and then force upon your customers expecting open arms. Allow the users to bring back the experience they have become accustomed to.

I remember when everyone was buying new laptops with the downgrade to windows xp option while vista was out. I see the downgrade to windows 7 thing happening and in the future Microsoft will have to patch in a real desktop interface. If they patch in a real desktop interface I might make the jump.. if not I guess I will just hold out for Windows 9 and hope that it is more like Windows 7.

Heck I could even hold out until they release and force a new direct x on us which is not until at least the next generation of consoles come out after this new one which is probably 6 years away if not longer.

Windows 7.... I love you.
Success.
