People can make all the arguments they want "This so and so is better" "Windows 8 has this new feature or that new feature". But here's the thing, Linux may be the best, fastest, and most secure OS out there but it hasn't caught on as a mainstream OS simply because it requires a huge learning curve to use (among other reasons). Consumers will use what is easy and familiar. Why do you think Mac's have been successful? It's not because it's "better" than windows. It's because of "ease of use". From essentially Windows 95 till now the basics of using a windows computer have been basically the same with slow changes and improvements along the way. Not one version has instituted major changes like this. It's been said "just spend a week with it and you'll start to like it". Doesn't matter one single bit. At least 3/4 of consumers make a decision within the first 5 to 10 minutes. Changing them from that "first impression" is an uphill battle and the reason people in sales (other than your local big box store) take extensive training to be effective (just look at car salesmen). You stick most people in front of a computer for 5-10 minutes with Windows 8 and they'll walk away. You can argue "features" or "productivity" all you want and that won't change it one tiny bit. Products are successful or failures based on consumer spending. Windows Vista had it's faults to be sure, It wasn't nearly as bad as some would have everyone to believe but it had it's faults. And look how the consumers treated that one. And that was with a version of windows that was at least familiar. The author of the article is completely correct. It has a very huge chance of not just being a failure but an unmitigated disaster. It's not even out yet and it's divided the community with a majority on the side of "I hate it". Take a look at the history. Vista came out in beta and was not a hit. It went on to dismal sales and is generally regarded as a failure (revenue wise) for MS. 7 came out in beta and it was generally considered a "hit" and it went on to generate significant sales and revenue. It doesn't take a fortune teller to see what's in the cards for the future of Windows 8. If Linux can't shift people over away from previous installs of windows, and it costs nothing to use, how does anyone expect Windows 8 to be a success.

I've already predicted that Balmer will be fired within 6 months of the release of Win 8 (rapidly approaching). I would not be surprised one bit if Gates himself came out of retirement.

I simply drew the parallel between Unity and Windows 8 because they both have an interface style that does the following:
- Hides/removes features from the user.
- Appears to be geared for a touch screen.

As for your Linux rant, I dual boot primarily for gaming. Almost anything 'productive' I can do with a linux box and can stay completely away from the command line.

As an experiment, I dropped Mint13 on my partner's laptop to see what would happen. All I had to do was configure the system and turned em loose. As some background my partner isn't a tech savvy person and has an old PPC mac that still does a lot of lifting. Again, you have to ask: "How is the system going to be used?" If you answer "lots of current gen high-demand video gaming" eh, Linux is not the solution you want. In this case, it was browsing the web, Youtube, watching DVDs, and word processing. Yeah. Linux does those just as good as a Windows box.

The result was that my partner was functioning just fine soon after I deployed the machine. I do suspect driver compatibility issues and a crappy 5400rpm disc drive that wasn't being helpful. But there was never the moment of "I don't know what to do!" coming from a non technical person. Honestly, Ubuntu and Mint have done a nice job moving Linux towards being more MacOS like (Which at least way back when was a FreeBSD derivative.) So if you are saying that a tech savvy guy like yourself can't get over the dirt simple install and cannot do basic functions using Linux, that makes me sad. If it's just that it doesn't do what you need. (such as, play lots of games) I feel you. Wine is serviceable for some things, but you still get a performance hit, and is generally not worth the bother to me. That's why I dual boot. smile.gif

While I don't like Windows 8, MSoft can push installs through the OEMs all day long. It's tough to get a laptop with no OS, and you could strip that junk out of there and HOPE you have Win7 drivers available, run Linux (and void your warranty according to what I will politely call the "moon logic" of some members here), or you run Win8. Regardless, you buy a copy of Windows 8. Ding! Microsoft sold a copy of Windows 8. OEM boxes sold to average consumers will come with Windows 8. You stand a better chance of getting no OS here, but last time I bothered to look -- a long while back, Dell and HP were discouraging it and in the case of HP, I think wanted to charge me more for that bare machine. Behold the near-monopoly power of Microsoft. tongue.gif

The corporate desktop space will be interesting to watch because big IT shops likely have a lot more clout with OEM vendors. Here there is probably room for pushback because if you are an OEM supplying a Ho-jillion boxes to P&G and they say they want windows 3.11 on every box you sell them. Yep. You are gonna do just that or they will find someone who can. Yes, I'm being extreme there on purpose to make the point obvious that if an OEM customer stands to sell a huge number of units with certain specifications, they are going to pressure their vendors to get them what they need.

I liked Dvorak's rant's from way back when; it's a shame that all those PC Magazine (or was it PC world) issues are long gone. His commentary on the direction of computing was usually compelling. That said, Win8 won't totally gutterball, because of some of the reasons above coupled with folks who MUST have the latest technology for whatever reason they have decided upon. Ballmer will likely keep his job at the helm, and Microsoft will likely say that their anti-piracy measures are working great because folks aren't pirating Windows 8 like they did with the previous generation of OS.

Whew! That was long. Hopefully the paragraphs broke that into readable chunks. biggrin.gif

Most sensible post I've read thus far in here. I agree with a lot of your points. I like Windows 8, that's my own personal opinion. Although I do know that the majority of people hate it already, I don't think it will fail because of what you have outlined. Microsoft will make a nice amount of cash on the sale of OEM machines, just as they always have. Won't be long till local stores will be running promo's for Windows 8 upgrades and laptop's. Windows 8 will be far from an unmitigated disaster. I will admit that there is going to be a tight grip on Windows 7 for many years to come just as there was with XP, but don't you think that eventually we will reach a point where an OS upgrade every three years is the norm? without people complaining about it!

Also I constantly see post here and on other forums of people saying Windows 9 will have it all fixed. Like they think Microsoft will bring back the original start menu??. I honestly can't see how they can think that as i'm sure the start menu as we have known it for all these years will now be gone for good.

Windows 8 will be exactly what Windows vista was............A step in a new/better direction, and to get the general public accustom to what will come in future Windows operating systems(in vista's case, Windows 7). Weather it be big core level changes or big visual changes.

Again this is my personal opinion. Take for what you will.

hit the Windows key and type..

I think part of it is the attitude the developers are displaying that's rubbing people the wrong way. The dev team has stated that they believe that tablets and handhelds are the future. So this seems like (and probably is) it is the start of a complete abandonment of the desktop PC. I think that's what's angered people the most. All the rest, making people relearn windows etc., the consumers will vote with their wallets and we'll see how much of a success/failure it is.
