I recently had my older Western Digital 1TB Black die on me, I had most of my games installed on it. Luckily it is in warranty for almost another year, the Black's five year warranty is great, and in the meantime I've installed a Western Digital 640GB drive, which were actually some of the fastest drive you could get in that class back then. Here is a benchmark from my old 2 disc RAID 0 array, short stroked, with WD6400AAKS drives:

It got me thinking, I know there are faster drives out today than either a single 1TB Black or the older 640GB drive. But most of the drives I see and work with at my shop are lower end, cheaper drives. It is rare I get to see large, faster drives. So, barring 10K drives, which are still out of my price range, which drives in this class are the fastest today?
