Payday was a decent low budget game in the same type of mold as L4D. They should do fine.
As far as L4D's story goe sI honestly think it's about as good as it gets in games. Cut-scenes are a poor mans movie. Allowing you to explore the world and piece it together your own way is the only thing games as a medium can do as far as story telling that is totally different then books, movies or TV. This is one thing Valve and only a few other developers understand. Having a game with 10+ hours of cut-scenes is ridiculous (I'm looking at you Metal Gear Solid) and I think is missing the point.
