I think the original reason the OP was going DSLR was because they wanted to use ND filters on their cam, and the point and shoots they were considering don't allow them.

There's seriously a cheaper fix, and it's been mentioned already: Welding glass. It's $10 and it's like a 10 stop ND filter. yeah, sometimes, it comes with a color cast, but you can correct that after the fact fairly simple.

Yeah seems like the 300d is a good camera. The one I found on Craigslist was 150 with lens, I can email them and see how much it was used.

I am sitting between that and the canon 300hs. I saw what what each is capable of.

I understand the sensor is MUCH larger and with this cam I can change the lens whenever, add filters. But the point and kill is much smaller in size and fits in pockets. I do not want to buy a really old camera and have it die on me 1 week later.

The welding glass problem is, frankly, how do you mount it on a point and shoot? I'm sure you could get it to work-ish somehow, but then you also have to consider you'll need a manual exposure mode to correct for the glass as the camera will most certainly not meter through it.

So I am sure the 300D would have nd filter kits right?

I found the ELPH 300HS on craigslits brand new with a bunch of other stuff like mini tripods, for $130, black color. Very good deal.

Again, the 300d is $150. I emailed them, and they said it works like it should, but they were the second owner, so that could be a redish flag. They let me bring it back after 24 hours from purchase.

Again sorry for saying the same thing, but I like the fact that the P&S is very compact, and easy to use, and have 1080p VIDEO!! even 240 fps mode, kinda cool to have video just in case you know.

BUT the 300D has many options and I would love to have the option to change lenses and add a bunch of filters. BUT I know that some time the shutter might die and I have to replace that.

If I were to do that long of an exposure on the P&S it would be ALL WHITE!
Besides how did they do that? Was a filter right?

to take a picture like that you want to have a ND filter to cut the light down to do a long exposure. but a night time shot like that you just really must have a tripod and camera that will chose the right settings or preferably have a manual exposure control to do it yourself to get the best image possible that you are trying to get

if a shot like that is all white on a P&S your exposure settings are not correct and you need to either chose a higher number fstop or a much lower ISO setting or both

The E-PL1 body is $130 for a refurb. The micro 4/3rd lenses are a bit expensive though. Cheapest I have found for the kit lens is $100. Another option is to get micro 4/3 adapters to other lenses, such as M42, OM, K mount lense. Older full manual lenses can be had for less than $50 and the adapter is about $10.

The Digital Rebel is a risk buying. I currently have one, but it's broken. The shutter isn't broken, but the mirror is. I can still take pictures, just half of the image shows up.

I also had the E-PL1. Surprisingly good for the price. The menu system is a bit clumsy and cumbersome, but it does have some nice features. Does 720p video though. The only thing I wish it had was a built in mic input and shutter release cable, but that didn't bother me. Considering I got it for $240 after shipping.

Yeah well I set ISO 10 on my current P&S and still get all white. It wont let change F-stop.

Night shots are good, exposure at 80 seconds and I get a nice small streak of the stars, not too bright and not too dark.

I think I will get the Canon 300D,even if old, I can at least customize it later on. My main goal is macro and long exposure shots.

But I cannot install CHDK on that camera.

Do note that macro shots are going to need a macro lens. The 18-55mm lens can focus pretty close, but its maximum magnification is still much less than a macro lens.

Do note that macro shots are going to need a macro lens. The 18-55mm lens can focus pretty close, but its maximum magnification is still much less than a macro lens.

Oh yeah right right. But it would be much better compared to the P&S.
