About a decade ago, me & wife move to a new house, back then wireless routers were not easily available or the technology was in it's infancy. I spent a great deal of time wiring CAT 5 ethernet wires in all the rooms, kitchen, family room, basement, etc. (my attic was full of wires:)) only to learn less than a year later about wireless routers. I looked like a fool doing what I was doing back then. Technology is evolving.
With NAS & remote storage gaining grounds (Apple iCloud, etc.) it's really getting impractical doing such a set up as using multiple hard drives. Lots of people even abandoning RAID & just use a single SSD as boot drive.
By the way, if backplane is your thing, there's backplanes out there that can hold (6) 2.5 inch SSDs using just (1) drive bay space.
Or you can use a NAS...
I did consider my options when I assembled my system a bit over a year go including putting stuff up in home or work and using it as remote desktop or carrying a HDD box from which to boot (after all, what most people consider their "computer" is actually just he file system and files in it). However, just building the PC and carrying it with me ended up still the best option after considering the advantages and disadvantages of each configuration.
The network infrastructure is just not yet that good, there are some security and performance concerns and couple of hardware/software issues as well and ease of maintenance/reliability. One of the concerns was ofc budget as well - as usual mine was finite so I had maximize what I can get for the set amount of resources.
Overall I'm reasonably happy with carrying the case around with me. 20 kg is not THAT much and its not like I drag it around in public transport so have to carry it about 100 meters at max.
