D2X with dt990 PRO

Hi,
I am planning on getting some new headphones and a clip on mic as my 4th pair of razer carcharias have broke frown.gif
i have been looking at the dt880 and dt990 but i think i will go with the 990 PRO as they are alot cheaper, but will my D2X be enough to drive them?
Thank you

Well, it seems like the D2X is more like a DAC than an amp when it comes to headphones, so they will drive the pros, but not to good levels. The Beyers really need a good amp to sound good, from what I've heard. If you use the line out on the D2X and hook it up to a dedicated amp like the FiiO E9 or something of that nature, then you will be set.

That's DT 990 Pro 250 ohms? I think there may be some rare Pro version of other impedances.

As far as I can tell, it doesn't really have a proper output for headphones. The stereo front output jack is backed by a LM4562 op amp, apparently—which is a high fidelity op amp, but not rated for loads under 600 ohms, like most op amps. Also, Asus is probably using a series resistor of about 100 ohms on the output. Regardless, as long as the load is relatively high impedance like 250 ohms, they may be still okay. With a lower load, there could be more performance issues.

The D2X is listed as a pretty standard 2V rms line output. However, you'll lose some of that across the output series resistor. DT 990 is also a bit insensitive (quiet), at around 98-100 dB SPL / 1V input. You'll be limited to maybe 101-103 dB SPL output at max peaks with the D2X, probably. That's probably not enough for some tastes, with music that isn't dynamic range compressed a lot.

So I would guess that the sound quality would be just fine, but it could potentially not be loud enough.

how would the STX be for them? would that be sufficient?

STX would work just fine. But again, depending on how loud you listen, you might be able to just use the D2X directly. I would at least try that before buying anything else. That's not perfectly ideal, but neither is spending a significant amount of extra money. Didn't you want the DT 990 Pro because it was cheaper?

If you do get something, don't you already have a D2X? All you need is a reasonably-powerful headphone amplifier. Unless you really insist on having nothing external and plugging the headphones into the sound card in the chassis, you can just connect the sound card to an amp and the headphones to the amp. Granted, cabling would be a little messier if you really want to use a clip-on mic.

The integrated amp in the STX is mostly similar to the one in the FiiO E9, by the way. Getting that would be cheaper than an STX. If you ever think you might want to use certain lower-impedance headphones or sensitive IEMs in the future, an Objective2 is a little more expensive than an E9 and is better for those tasks. At a lower price point, some type of dual-battery CMoy variant may be okay. It depends on the design.

well the power connector on my d2x is hanging off the pcb, so i either use superglue or get a new one frown.gif
