Budget AMD Rendering Mule

Thread Starter
YO!

So, I've been thinking about building myself a rendering mule for a while now, just so I don't have to keep everything on my current rig, to make life simpler smile.gif

I know intel is a lot better for rendering and such, but I'm going to try to do this all on the cheap.

Ive already got:

Case: CM Storm Scout
HDD: 500GB WD Blue
PSU: Corsair HX750
Current Sig rig mobo: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 (AM3) [getting a new one for my sig]
RAM: 4GB Kingston Hyper X 1333

so ill be needing another 4GB RAM, I know more ram is obviously better for rendering purposes, but I'm not looking for epic performance, just wanting something I can leave working, without temperature issues, and without it draining a lot of power.

so I'm basically just looking for a CPU that would be up to the job.

I've been looking at things like triple core's and the lowest priced FX quad core, but I cant decide on anything :/ any opinions?

EDIT: if the best option would be FX then I'd also like suggestions on a good am3+ mobo too, not too expencive but would need to have 4 ram slots, as the kingston I have is 2x2GB

Pfft, not sure tbh mate, I'm just open to anything that's suggested, I'd like to know if the low end am3 athlons would be sufficent and such, but if they aren't then the budget would be what ever is suited to the task.

As an ideal though, I wouldn't really be looking to spend more that £150 on the CPU

I would have to say an FX-8120 if you can find one in your price range, or else look at a Phenom X6, or X4 960T and hope it will unlock to an X6.

In order of best to worse:

- FX-8150

- FX-8120

- Phenom X6

- Phenom X4 960T

- Phenom X4

- FX-6100

Not sure how the triple core Phenoms stack up against the 4100's, but I assume they would be above the 4100's and below the 6100's.

i must have missed it, but what happened to the 1100T?

if it does not exists anymore, then i suggest go get a 960T if it is available in your area. BTW, we have a very similar motherboard.

EDIT: if i am not mistaken our mobos would not take any fx. if it does it would surely carry an 8120.

nvm, i saw that you are picking up a new board. if this is the case the 8120 will be considered an upgrade.

Your board is good, so I'd suggest putting any Phenom ii x6 in there. They are around 150$ and probably your best bet so you don't need to change boards and such.

Cheers for all the replies, i already have an 1100T in my sig rig.

I was looking for something a little less pricey really, has anyone else actually got an amd rig purely for rendering?

Would any of these be good option?
