Does overclocking help much?

Thread Starter
Is it worth overclocking from 4.4-4.7?
How much PPD can I expect? Currently PPD is between 27,000-32,000 depending on the project.
I will gain about 7-10*C in temps and vcore will be at 1.44 for 4.7 (crappy chip redface.gif )

I am not a folder but I know folding software will use what it can so you should theoretically get a ~7% increase. That's what I would assume anyways, it can't hurt to see for yourself unless you don't want to waste the time working on stability when you could be getting points.

Thats the thing. I dont want to waste time if I dont gain an increase worth overclocking.

Thanks for your reply thumb.gif

Yes, any little bit helps with folding. But I personally never used that chip, so i can't say what the gain will be. But you will notice a small bump in PPD. biggrin.gif

If i'm not mistaken, QRB is exponential (or something like that). If you were able to cut your TPF in half, your PPD would be on a rocket to the ISS.
I like to keep my rigs 100% stable, and usually try to stay on the low side of the voltage wall (that point at which it takes stupid voltage to pass).

I was interested, so I flipped my i7-3820 to stock (3.6Ghz stock, 3.8Ghz turbo), and folded for a couple of days (6 cores in a Linux VM). It was getting roughly 17k PPD. Flipped it back to it's OC (5.0GHz), and I'm at 28.8k PPD (6 cores in a Linux VM still). So yes, I'd say folding with overclocks helps a significant amount- if you have proper cooling.

[EDIT] Thought I'd add, this was the same project - 6099, the time per fold went from 9:28 minutes per fold, down to 7:01 minutes per fold.

Diber, TPF is time per frame (which is a percentage point, IIRC).

Ahh, alrighty then. I figured it was the time it took for a step in the fold to be complete (By the looks of things for me anyway, it seems that the TPF time seems to be 1% of the total time for a unit, and by it decreasing, it meant that the unit would be completed faster, and thus, more points).

Thanks for the clarification smile.gif
