Unable to overclock i5-3570k

Thread Starter
Hey everyone.

I recently build a new pc with the i5-3570k and a gigabyte z77-d3h motherboard. I've attempted changing the multiplier as per the guide to sandy bridge overclocking and it just returns me to the bios with a failure to boot no matter what the attempted values are. Then I tried this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxCPyF-1tTc&feature=youtube_gdata_player with lower values than what he used for the turbo multipliers and it refused to boot at all. After some fiddling with components it managed to start up and said the bios was corrupted! Luckily it was able to repair itself. Ideas?

It would be handy if you could share your whole rig with us, in case it's not the CPU or the MoBo. smile.gif
So go on and create your rig using the RigBuilder, on the top left of the screen.
Next, go to your Profile and scroll down a lot. At the Signature part, click Edit Your Signature, and then in the dropdownmenu called "show off my stuff", select your rig. smile.gif

Anyway, try this:

1) Reset your BIOS to the Safe Default Values, and see if this starts up normally.
2) After having tried step 1), restart again, go to the UEFI/BIOS and make sure the BClock is set to 100MHz and the Multiplier to 44 for all cores. Press F10 to save those changes and see if this works. smile.gif
3) Remove all your RAMsticks except one. Could be a RAM issue too here.
4) Remove your cooler (no idea which one it is), reapply some TIM (read: thermal paste), and reseat the cooler. smile.gif

I am having the same problem here. The most I can overclock to is 4GHz if the CPU multiplier is at anything above 40 I get a boot failure. Same with the FSB (Called CPU/PCI Frequency on this MoBo?) above 105.26 and then I get a boot failure.

Have you tried unpluging the computer and clearing your BIOS? You must disconnect power to clear CMOS. I found strange instability when making changes after a bad OC - maybe your BIOS are in a bad state out of the box. Also be sure to 'load optimized defaults' after clearing CMOS before making any OC changes (UltraVolta mentions this too). You could also try flashing the BIOS even if there isn't a new version available. If this were my board and none of this worked i would likely send it back as defective.

From what i have read about Ivy, you don't want to OC with your BCLK. even if you do, i believe it maxes out around where you are at on air so i'm not surprised by this (sorry, i forget where i read this).

So should I just overclock by changing the CPU multiplier?

Yep, 5 * 20 = 100 so just turn up your multiplier 1 or 2 notches while dripping the BCLK back to 100. Upping the BCLK overclocks your ram, your video card, your hard drives, everything connected to the bus - and can damage them too. I don't know where one enters the area of 'risk' when OCing with BCLK - one well respected member green lighted going 102.5ish link

At any rate, i suspect it was something other than your CPU preventing you form increasing the BLCK any higher and you might even get a higher OC dropping back to 100 BCLK if other components were destabilizing you.

Well I managed to get the multiplier to 40 and have been enjoying the 4GHz. But for some reason I get a boot failure every time I go above 40. I am not screwing with the BCLK either so that can't be the issue. I also have a Cooler Master Hyper 612 so cooling shouldn't be an issue.

I don't know if this is normal or not, but in CPU-z my BCLK shows up as 100.9. In the BIOS I have it set to 100.00, so I thought it was sort of weird. But I haven't issued any problems regarding computer performance because of it, and I'm still getting great performance in every game except Arma 2 (sometimes). So I don't know if this is a problem or not. But it definitely is strange.

There are many guides out there to overclock on this forums..

Most people use the Multiplier to OC not BLCK (that's for fine tuning to max only). If you need to hit over 4Ghz; you need to raise the voltage on it. http://www.overclock.net/t/1247869/official-the-ivy-bridge-stable-suicide-club-guides-voltages-temps-bios-templates-inc-spreadsheet.

Ignore the FSB BCLK showing decimal digit.

Can't help you much in the detail since I don't own an Ivy Bridge.

If you get an Error aka BSOD, please post the code 0x000 .

Most likely you need more Vcore voltage. For starter new into overclocking is not easy as you think one shot done. Lost count how many BSOD I've encountered under I get a stable voltage clock. Maybe a 50+ of BSOD/reboot/reset during my OC test.

Ivy is also pretty new and as is with alot of newly released CPUs, check for bios updates. Helped me alot with an fm1 3870k build I did a few weeks ago.
