3930K or 3770K or 2700K - Page 3

With the 3770k, to hit 4.5 with HT on I needed 1.25 vcore for stability and the temps were in the mid 70's..
I ran both systems with a pair of GTX680's and the variance between the two in benches was less than 1%.
The 3930k being a 6 core chip obviously adds to certain types of productivity software that can benefit from the additional cores, just don't expect it to be better in gaming than a 2600k/3770k.
Also the nonsense someone else claimed above above PCI 3.0 and additional lanes is unfounded. Two cards on a PCI 2.0 board at 8x8x are virtually identical to being run on a PCI 3.0 board at 16x16x. I've tested it that way as well.
Get the best bang for the buck rather than what people who are trying to justifiy their purchases tell you to buy.

The Ivy chips can handle running hotter. Just because they run hotter doesn't mean they produce more heat.

I have no idea where you came up with the idea that dual GPU PCIe 2.0 at 8x/8x is the same as PCIe 3.0 16x/16x at all. The PCIe 2.0 is half the bandwidth already. 8x PCIe 3 is equal to PCIe 2 16x not the other way around.

Real world performance might not be much different but what we don't know is the future. What if next year's GPU upgrade shows a larger gap in performance? We really don't know and we cannot speak for the OP as to his/her upgrade cycle and when they will be looking to upgrade and what type of SLI setup they might want to use.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2238947

That link shows quad SLI GTX 680s in PCIe 3.0 vs PCIe 2.0 notice that at really high resolutions (the only reason to run more than 2 cards) you're losing a huge chunk of your framerate.

Now what else you said may be true, but what you did was a mild upgrade. Is the OP doing the same upgrade or are they coming from a much older system that will be a big jump?

I came up with the "idea" by benching the two systems against each other with identical gpu's (dual 680's). Frankly real world performance is all that should matter but if you are addicted to synthetic benches, knock yourself out...

I completely understand that the 3770 has a higher thermal limit. I'm just not happy with the amount of heat that it pumps out as a result of the die shrink.

Also the test you linked from Anand (Which I read awhile back) is for quad gpu's not dual... The OP is looking at dual 670's. I agree that there are performance benefits for increased bandwidth with more than 2 gpu's. I noticed a similar effect testing 3 7970's awhile back.

Those are real world performance numbers in actual games. I already said it wasn't dual GPU so why are you trying to point out what I told you?

I'm making the point that you might think PCIe 3.0 is useless now, but what if you decide to put in a card next year and your performance is halved because you're still on PCIe 2.0? We don't know the future so while a GTX 670 even SLi might not show a difference, what if a GTX 780 does later?

I'd rather plan for the if or maybe now, when I'm making the purchase. Hate to regret not having PCIe 3.0 later.

I do get where you're coming from, but I am showing a different side of the coin and giving the OP something to consider as I don't know if he/she will upgrade again down the road or how long they expect to keep this build.

Is there any difference in performance regarding the dual channel and quad channel is 3930k and 3770k builds?
Assuming I will populate all slots on the machine.

Thanks!

If can afford it 3930K i think is a way better choice and the route i went. I wasn't about to dump my 2700k That does 5.3 on water at reasonable temps. for a more efficient die shrink chip that gets Hotter, dont clock as high and has stock speeds only slight performance increase and still be on Dual channel ram. So only Upgrade was the 3960x or 3930k which does support PCI-3.0 x16 on 2 slots on my board as i only run dual cards anyway Max, i was actually very disappointed seeing what Ivy had to offer. Even if a 3770K does perform a little bettter in gaming (Slight) Sandy -E will clock higher anyway and even that out. Also sandy is limited there it may game on Par or slightly better. But why not have a chip that does it all better.

2011 Socket to me was the only Logical choice at the moment from Sandy Bridge. Plus what about Ivy -E? will that be 2011 socket?

Just my thoughts

Assuming you're gaming?

If video editing the most threads helps. 3930K on LGA2011, 12 threads and overclock easy to 4.6Ghz on a good air cooler

Thanks!

I recall for applications that can utilize it, the quad channel was maybe 1.7x the speed of dual channel

Instead of making a new thread I may as well ask here. What would you guys recommend then if you throw encoding into the loop? 2700k or 3770k? I am a streamer on twitch.tv and I currently stream @ 720p with a 2500k @ 4.5ghz and it cuts it close. I'm looking to stream at 1080p but that would require an upgrade to either a 2600k/2700k/3770k.

Would a 3770k be a lot better at encoding than a 2700k?

Do you mean decoding? yes the faster one. go LGA2011 if you can 3930K for video

Get the 3770K since you're mostly going to be gaming.
