It was the 80GB & 60GB models that had that issue. When they made the 40GB it had a die-shrunk CPU and a significantly smaller power supply than the 60 & 80. Some later models of the 40GB even had a die-shrink GPU as well.

Had my 80gb Phat motorstorm ps3 from mid 07 :S haven't had any YLOD or issues.
Asided from the fact when I opened it up last week I found literally no thermal paste on it xD. Clean that junk off for some Tuniq tx-2 and now its working golden

In all seriousness though I would definitely keep it. as for firmware I believe your looking for around 3.6 but I can't remember. It's a good console to have in the house to watch blurays (if you don't download HD movies).
