Hi ********,
We are currently investigating the leak of some Last.fm user passwords. This follows recent password leaks on other sites, as well as information posted online. As a precautionary measure, we're asking all our users to change their passwords immediately.
Please log in to Last.fm and change your password on your settings page.
Your username is: *********
Your email address is: **************************
We will never email you a direct link to update your settings or ask for your password.
We strongly recommend that your new Last.fm password is different to the password you use on other services. For more advice on choosing a solid password we recommend: http://www.google.co.uk/goodtoknow/online-safety/passwords/
We're sorry for the inconvenience around changing your password; Last.fm takes your privacy very seriously. We'll be posting updates in our forums and via our Twitter account as we get to the bottom of this.
A copy of this message is online at http://www.last.fm/passwordsecurity.
Thanks,
The Last.fm Team

They put it at the top of the last.fm website about 2-3 days before they sent out the email. Someone who doesn't regularly check their account would have found out on their own well before the email reached them. The hackers got the list of email addresses of members. My email wasn't actually hacked but it was being spoofed. Since the hack I've got twice as much spam and half the emails are coming in with my email in the 'from' section, but it wasn't actually sent from a yahoo account.

On the original topic of the PSN outage, my friend said it only went out for 2 hours, and the website of an official playstation magazine was also down at the same time.

No it isn't. I have my email address that I use for both my bank account, credit card, and paypal displayed and available on many websites and none of my information has been compromised. Web security is based around the usage of strong, differing passwords. All my passwords are in hashed format from a master password that I know. If any site that uses my password gets compromised, I simply go in and change the master password, and voila, I have brand spankin new passwords. It's not that difficult to safeguard your personal information if you are diligent about it.

However it was encrypted. It's still not like it is being constanly hack or being hacked by some 14 year old kid. But credit to microsoft they did give him a job....

so because it hasn't happened to you, it cant? Someone finds out your email, they can request information for accounts signed up on different services. If you put in your address and postal code(zip code), they can now track you down to your house. It happened to my aunt not too long ago. Someone had claimed their postal code was hers. She thought it was no big deal thinking someone mis-entered their own information. 2 months later, she has a 2500$ debt that was taken out on the mortgage she was paying....if that wasn't bad enough, she lost control of her bank account because a person had claimed THEIR account was taken over(was actually my aunts account). It took her at least a year to recover and to this day she doesn't bank anymore. Information is private for a reason...because it can be used for you and against you.
