Recommended Cooling Setup for Phantom 410

Thread Starter
NZXT Phantom 410 (Mid-Tower)

My friend is considering dropping some money on a new cooling setup.
He wants to fill all the fan areas to maximize airflow, sound is a somewhat precious item he does not want to give up, but he'd rather give it up over heat.

He has $200 in his budget, for both a cooling setup as well as headset.
Water cooling is not an option.

I do have an Antec Kuhler 620 brand new, I'm also contemplating selling to him, but I'm not sure if I'd want to use it later on myself.

I'm contemplating recommending Aerocool Sharks all around, but not sure if that's the best way.

His setup:
Intel i5-2500k @ 3.8GHz - Hyper 212+ Evo Cooling
ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 Mobo
Gigabyte 7850 - Currently being RMA'd
Corsair XMS3 12GB

Suggestions?

I wouldn't recommend Aerocool Sharks, except at 7 Volts. Check out the fans in my sig, then check out my review of the 410 here.

The Aero Sharks do get a bit loud at 12v. But limited, they are one of the best fans I've ever dealt with. As of right now, if i could switch fans, I'd go with the new corsair AF120 line Here. And for high airflow to noise ratio, i'd go with this exact model Here. Gotta love corsair.

Check out this review from one of my favorite Youtube reviewers. Linus

Edit: I realize these aren't ideal for a budget rig, but:
1. You already mentioned Aero Shark which are about the same price
2. these fans will last multiple builds easily
3. I heart.gif LOVE heart.gif CORSAIR

As for airflow, i'd follow this: ( and maybe switch the top to exhaust, since heat rises)

I was not able to find a good place for your fans in your sig, beside on the heatsink.
I am under the impression good case fans & good heatsink fans are somewhat different.
Which would you recommend overall?

AF series are awesome fans, but at ~$20 a pop, not TOO practical, but something we will have to consider.
If we go the route of the AFs, we will need to trim the amount of fans we use.

It's now a tossup between the FZ's and the AF's..
Thinking of just going FZ's, though.

However, the FZ's seem to do 83.6CFM @ 24.5dBa while the AF's are going to be doing 63.7 @ 24dBa..
Sounds like the FZ series are better fans?

c'mon.. you have 4 50cfm+ fans pointed at the GPU, and no where for air to exaust, not good.
if you are counting on the pci vent fillers those cant pass any air-flow requirement at all.
the PSU is no help here. the HDD cages block 80% of the intake flow so it is just filler.
the roof rear position cancels the H80 exhaust, just deforms the ability to flow correctly.
if you gotta use fans in the roof, use them as exhaust without H80, front only position with H80.
no using the HDD cage, remove it. skip the floor fan, keep the side panel fan. and filter all
intake fans.

At the end of the day a fan is a fan is a fan, they all do the same thing. It's your choice really what you want, ( and what you want to spend). You'll be happy with most of the fans out there. just compare the stats and read reviews.

As for that airflow pic I posted.... I'd keep that same setup, but switch the top to exhaust(as I previously said). That case is made to be a bottom intake case.

I have that case. I have NZXT fans for all of the fan slots. I got them from Amazon ($6.99 for 120mm and $8.99 for 140mm). Noise is low and the cooling is good. If I had to do it all over again I would probably buy the same fans since they're cheap.

This is generally a good idea. The only problem I have with Yate Loon fans is that they click when undervolted; otherwise I'd recommend those.

As for exhaust, I always recommend taking a nibbler to the exhaust grill and removing it. Then remove the unused slot pillars. With no obstruction, air just leaves the case silently, with no need for more fans.

Overall I recommend living with a case before you decide on new fans. As for case fans I prefer cheap. The only exception is when you are going to use case fans as a direct feed to your heatsink. Then I recommend PWM fans -- cheap ones. Sleeve bearings OK.

For heatsinks I'd recommend something other than sleeve bearings.

When you say they click when undervolted do you mean when the fans are running at less than full power?
