Problems with Sapphire 7970 Dual-X OC Edition - A warning to owners and a request for advice - Page 6

Hi guys, so I just installed the Corsair TX850M (850W) which is 80+ bronze certified and was able to finish a game in Battlefield 3 but then went and tested some other things and I'm having the same issue...

Sleeping Dogs in ultra settings won't even go through the intro before the PC crashes and monitor loses the signal. Now I'm starting to think it may be a faulty video card, but sadly I have no other place to test it. I monitored the temperature of the CPU and it crashed at about 64 C which i don't think is such a high temp.

Also, I downloaded FurMark which is a perfect tool to reproduce the problem, it will crash the PC in less than 10 seconds. What do you think? The person in the store says I should get a UPS and it is driving me mad because i would be spending more money on something that i don't think will solve the problem. I tested both memory sticks separately, ran cpu stress tests, everything I can possibly imagine but still no luck. Everything seems to be telling that the video card is broken.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What drivers are you using and what motherboard/cpu do you have?
Thread was tl;dr, but I have had three of these in my time. I currently only have one in my rig, but I ran two for a couple months and the two that I ran were perfect. Once I had an issue with screens disconnecting and then I realised it was a bad mini-display port adapter. I DID get one that was DOA, and I got a refund.

I recently sold my second one, and the buyer got it, took off the heatsink, and was testing it, not sure if it had a waterblock on it or not, and he said that his system was crashing. I really don't know what could have caused that; I never used the second card as a master in my CFX setup, it was always the slave, but every game recognised it. Other than that and the DOA card, both my Dual-X cards have been exceptional, In even got 1220MHz on one of them.

Your GPU is not getting enough power; one of the pins might not work, I don't know, but that is DEFINITELY what happens when you don't have enough power to the card.

Thread Starter
Sounds like you have a faulty card man, Telling you to buy a UPS after you just got a new high quality PSU? Sounds like these guys are just saying anything to not deal with you returning the card. I would just take it back and tell them you are returning it under warranty, full stop, no more discussion haha

And to Lazybear, i'm glad you didn't read through the whole thread, haha. All it was was me having to return a faulty Dual-X 7970 and in while testing i noticed a design flaw where the heat-sink cuts into the cables for both of the fans, right through the insulation to the wire. That was definitely not the cause of all my crashes though, the card was just BAD. The new one I got isn't even the OC edition and i have managed to get it up to almost 1300mhz relitively stable under water tehehe thumb.gif

I am using Catalyst 13.1, not the beta ones. I also tested with the beta drivers. Motherboard is a Gigabyte D3H and CPU i5 3570 (Not overclocked). I've run tests to rule out every other component.

This happens both with a Thermaltake 600W which i returned and then got a Corsair TX850M (850W), I've tried connecting it every way possible and I'm getting the same results.

Check this video i took with my phone, it shows how fast it freezes when the GPU is pushed

So what do you guys think?

Furmark is really not a good program to test graphics cards with, as it will stress the card in a way that no game can do, fyi. all the crashing i ever experienced with my 7970s was first bad drivers (12.3-12.6 didnt give the DP adapters enough power so my monitors were always disconnecting. almost RMA'd a card over that one....), then the x58/x79 CFX/Eyefinity lockup bug (only affected x58/x79, fixed with 12.8 iirc), then something akin to a loose power connector (card was crashing, swapped cable then it worked). I ran my current rig off a 2 year old TX750 without issue, so that PSU should be powering your gpu just fine. What kind of assortment of pcie power connectors did it come with?

Furmark is just an example, I get exactly the same results with demanding games, such as Sleeping Dogs and Battlefield 3 (it takes a bit longer, not much though). The PSU has 2 PCI Express cables with 8 pins which i can directly connect to the video card. The card also has other adapters but they are not needed because i can conect it directly to the PSU.

What drivers would you suggest?

Ok, some updates here. I was able to test the video card with a friend's PC that has a different motherboard and PSU. I got the same issues, now I'm sure the card is broken and already sent it for replacement. They say they will check it and then approve the replacement. Thank you guys for your advice, I will post again once I get the new one.

Is this the brown or blue PCB? Only asking since I have the blue PCB.
