First timer...Be Gentle...?

So been lurking in the build logs for ages now, and have finally decided to jump into my own build. Here is my Prosal below:

Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 Adavcned
Mobo: MSI Big Bang-XPower LGA 1366 Intel X58
Processor: i7-990X Extreme Edition
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate(64 bit)
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw 24GB 240 Pin DDR3 1600
SSD: OCZ Agility 3 60GB (To be used for the OS)
HDD: Two WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6GB
Graphics: EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2GB (One for now, eventually two)
PSU: ..................................................................
Monitor: Already own
Keyboard: Already own
Mouse: Already own
Blu-ray: ..................................................................

Will be using this computer for gaming and 3d modeling/rendering. I also tend to have about 50internet windows open at the same time as modeling or gaming, so that's my justification for the 990x. Not sure what PSU to get, and the case I went with for all the positive reviews for size and space to work in.

Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your build

Case - $149.99

RAM - 149.99


For the small cost difference, I'd go with all of the Corsair products I listed above for your first build,

especially for the PSU at least, (7 year warranty i think)

Because of Corsairs Trusted Reliability and AMAZING Warranty.

But that's just my opinion

REASONS:

SSD
The GT does 4KB 80,000 IOPS , the OCZ Agility only does 50,000

4KB IOPS are important for what you'll be doing.


PSU

Trusted Reliability and excellent warranty


Case

I realize this is more personal preference, but I can't stress enough how well built Corsair cases really are.


Memory

I've never used that particular memory, but if this is your first build, neither have you, so my PERSONAL preference would be the corsair RAM because i've had nothing but good news to says about it.

Any particular reason to go with the 990X instead of a 3930k/ 3960X . As far as I can tell they haven't exactly dropped in price...

I would go for a bigger SSD as well, you'll want some programs on there as well and 60GB isn't a whole lot.

Are you going to RAID those 2 WD blacks? If not then I'd get 1 2TB since the Price/GB is better at the moment.

Yes i would agree with this. I personally have a 120gb and wish it was bigger. I linked a 60GB because thats what OP had originally said, but yes i would recommend a much bigger SSD if you can afford it.

edit: I changed my first post to the Corsair Force GT 120GB but if you can afford a bigger one than that, go for it.

Have to agree with him. I would rather go with the 3930k/3960X, and a 128GB SSD, since you will fill up 60GB before you even know it. I suggest the Crucial M4 128GB. It's the best bang for the buck.

Don't go for the Agility 3, try to find a SanDisk Extreme they are better and sold at a great price. Crucial M4 beats the Extreme but it is a bit more expensive.

Also, you're better off with X79.

since you're building everything new.. you'd be better off going x79; that is i7-3930K with a decent motherboard, 16 -32GB of RAM, blah, blah, etc. etc.

ditch the case; personal preference aside, i had one and got over it real quick. it's an old case, over priced and looks ugly. it's by no means a bad case; it's got great airflow but chances are you'll want to get something different within a couple of months.

ditch the ssd; had nothing but bad experiences with agility drives. worst failure rate out of all ssds i've used. grab a crucial m4 or intel ssd as they'll look after you.

psu; depending on all your components, grab a decent 650 - 1000W antec, corsair, enermax, silvestone, etc. psu.

also, invest in an aftermarket heatsink.

tell us your budget, and we'll start putting together some alternative builds for you smile.gif

Graphics: EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2GB (One for now, eventually two)

Cooling: ...................................................................

So changed the mother board and went with the assassin which actually is better since I kinda have a green/black theme going in my head. Got the crucial since dropping the 990x saved some back and got a 256gb instead. Still unsure on the case then. I am debating doing water cooling even though I have never done it before. Bad idea?
