A little help with understanding Ivy Bridge?

Thread Starter
From all these varying sources on the Internet I have heard that Ivy Bridge has had serious problems because Intel went on the cheap with the IHS. I want to know if these claims are as grave as everyone has made them out to be. Also, if the rumors are true, if I wanted to buy an Ivy Bridge processor how would I keep it cool. What temperatures are safe for a microprocessor? I tend to freak out over my 2500k passing 50C. Thanks in advance for the information and advice. thumb.gif

Ivy Bridge is an improvement over Sandy Bridge. The only downside is that it gets rather hot when you overclock it by a large amount.
A 4.3GHz OC on IB will usually not get your CPU too hot, but you'll need to know what you're doing when you want a 4.7+GHz OC, plus you'll need decent cooling, just like every other 4.7+GHz OC on any platform. Usually, on air cooling, you can get to a 4.4-4.5GHz OC, and a 4.6GHz if you're lucky. Anything above that will require either a CLC (closed loop cooler, such as the H100) or a custom watercooling build.

But if you're already freaking out if you're SB gets past 50 at times (which is perfectly normal in some situations such as stresstesting or gaming on an OCed CPU), you'd best stay with SB because with IB you'll die of fear (read: for no reason). wink.gif

My 4.4ghz 3570k @ 1.22v hits max of 80c on prime, which is perfectly fine for testing. Never goes above 60c when gaming, on a cheap lil evo I'm happy
post #4 of 17
I run my 3570K at 4.1 and the last temps from playing BF3 maxed out for a couple hours shows max core temps: 48C, 50C, 48C, 47C
post #5 of 17
You should be perfectly fine if you´re not pushing over 1.35 V.

I would say IB is the better Cpu for OC in low overcklocking range. 4,2 Ghz running cool and fast with my 3770k.

I would say up to 4.5ghz, their overclocking potential is the same. THEN you run into the IHS problem, which can be countered with a closed loop, as previously stated. SB also gains a lot of heat from overclocking but not nearly as much so fast. My 2500k when i've overclocked it to 5.2ghz or so gets to 90C, which is seriously pushing it. The same IB chip would most likely Die.

What cooler should I get if I only want to run the 3570k at a mild 4.0Ghz?

You won't need more than a hyper 212+ or Evo. They're around $30.
