Toothpaste? That makes me curious, but to the OP, don't try that. Go get a Hyper 212 EVO and some Arctic Cooling MX-4. Make sure both the bottoms of the heatsink and the top of the CPU are completely cleaned off with 70%+ isopropyl alcohol (higher purity is recommended because it has less water and evaporates faster). Place a BB sized portion of MX-4 on the middle of the CPU and let the weight of the heatsink to spread it around. If you want you can put a dab on the bottom of the heatsink and use a credit card to create a translucent film.

Whatever you do make sure that stuff like hair, dust, or fingerprints do not make it onto these surfaces.

I did this and it worked well.
