Question about GTX580 SLI spacing requirements

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I'm still rocking an old system as you can see from my sig. I do have a question for those in the know when it comes to running GTX580 in 2 x SLI

I have recently acquired an EVGA GTX580 (Part #: 015-P3-1580-AR) for a reasonable price

For now I'm going to use that card along with my existing XFX 9800 GTX+ dedicated to physx

If I can find a 2nd GTX580 on the cheap then I'd like to run them in SLI.

Would I be able to do this safely on my existing Asus P5WDG2 motherboard without being too concerned about the lack of space between the two cards?

I have read multiple reports on these running very hot so I don't want to run the risk of cooking one from the radiant heat generated by the other.

Thanks for your time / comments.

The top card will have some of its air flow to the fan blocked by the bottom card being that close to one an other. The top card will most likely run hotter than the bottom, but since both cards have the exhaust style cooler where the hot air is pushed back to the back of your case, you shouldn't really run into any overheating issues.

Though, your Q6600 might be a big bottleneck to your cards.

The top card will get pretty hot, yes, but it's not going to burn up or damage the cards running them this way. However you'll probably want to create custom fan profiles to make the fans ramp up faster. Bottom-line keeping the temps from getting too high will involve a fair amount of fan noise in a config like this, but the cards will be fine. People used to run 480's in this config ... now THAT was hot and loud. But the cards can take it as long as fans properly ramp up. May want to go easy on the overvolting as well wink.gif

I've also got a system with that board, and I agree with most of the above. You should be fine. As to the CPU, do you have it overclocked? If not, I'd recommend it.

I had it overclocked for a while but when summer came along and the ambient temp's rose in the house I was living in the pc would often get too hot... as I was only using air cooling I decided not to bother with any more o/c'ing until I get into watercooling...

Since posting this post and thinking about one of the earlier comments stating the obvious bottleneck with my CPU I've decided to put some money aside to invest in a ROG Rampage IV Extreme and Intel core i7 3820 to get myself "caught up" so to speak.

Seems wise - Mine seems to be hanging on OK (core2quad @ 3GHz), but there are times when I can tell the CPU is holding it back (it may also be the DDR2 ram and FSB...).

That said I was able to get my Q6700 to 3GHz without touching the voltage (it's on auto, and stays in a very comfortable place) and it's perfectly stable (runs for weeks at a time at 100% load).
