help Fine-tuning 24/7 3930k OC 4.3-4.5 GHz for product rendering workflow

Hi,

I recently bought a brand new workstation, to be used primarily for product rendering (KeyShot).
It has the following core components:
  • Asus P9X79 DELUXE
  • Intel 3930k
  • Corsair H100 cooler
  • 2 x Patriot Viper Xtreme Series, Division Viper 2 Edition DDR3 8GB 2133MHz PXD38G2133C11K (11-11-11-30, 1.65V)
  • Corsair AX750 PSU

I had the 3930k overclocked to 4.3 GHz by the shop that built it. It was done through XMP by simply setting the multiplier to 43 (nothing else changed).
This gave great results in KeyShot, but I noticed vcore was hiting 1.42V under load and temps easily rose to 75°C.

So I decided to attempt a (safe) overclock on my own.
Summary of my BIOS settings:
  • AI Overclock Tuner = manual
  • BCLK = 100
  • multiplier = 43
  • Memory = DDR3-2133
  • CPU VCORE = manual @ 1.25V
  • DRAM Voltage = 1.65V
  • DRAM Timings = primary @ 11-11-11-30-3

The following screens show what I ended up with in detail.

33xx275.jpg
2mwhvr.jpg
2aaim20.jpg
xmr1au.jpg
2lt6moi.jpg
288a2l3.jpg

These settings give me the same performance in KeyShot, but with a max temp of 65°C. This is a great improvement already in my book.
I haven't run any stability stress tests (prime95...).

I'm by no means an OC expert so I'm calling out on you guys for great advice to improve my OC.

My goals:
  • An OC in the range 4.3 - 4.5 GHz
  • CPU temps in the range 60°C - 70°C under full load
  • Lowest possible VCORE (what else? wink.gif...)

My concerns with my current OC:
  • VCORE is fixed now @ 1.25V. Does this degrade CPU over time? Can it be set to be dynamic with a max. of 1.25V?
  • Am i missing some crucial votage settings? Should I have set certain voltages to a specific value (to start off with) where I now have 'auto'?

I hope you guys can help me out.

greetings,
Dries

How is your H100 setup? With push/pull or just push or just pull?
Anyway, with a H100, you should easily reach an OC of 4.7GHz. What I'd do, if I were you, is just set the Multiplier to 47 and the VCore to 1.35V. See if that runs stable enough, using a quick Intel BurnIn Test. smile.gif

Also make sure SpeedStep and C1E State are both enabled, so that your CPU can cool down when it's idle. smile.gif

Hi UltraVolta425,

H100 is in push. Case is a Corsair 600T. Radiator mounted on top.

So just multiplier to 47, VCORE (manually) to 1.35V and nothing else? Once I get home I will try these settings. Speedstep and all other energy saving features are enabled already...

4.7GHz seems a little high too me, though, for constant rendering in KeyShot. This program really maxes out all cores all the time. I really want something very stable. Isn't 4.7GHz pushing it? Is it safe to have a manual VCORE of 1.35V all the time? I would like to try using an offset voltage instead of manual fixed VCORE.
Any tips on how to approach this safely with a +/- 4.5GHz overclock in mind?

Tanks anyway for your reply thumb.gif!

greetings,
Dries

Hmm..You may benefit by reading this guide:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1578110
..might have to "open it up" to go that high..i.e. set cpu to 140% ..power limits to 250..etc..etc..
use offset voltage to have it throttle down..
have you tried tightening those timings at all?
use as little LLC as you can..this keeps heat down..as does enabling pll overvoltage..then setting the amount to .04-.012
I'd raise that cpuvtt voltage to 1.12
and cpu pll to 1.83
command rate 3? :eek.gif: That's gotta be slow..see if the RAM will do 2 or 1

Tanks for pointing out thumb.gif.
I just used the default values of this kit for now. I'll definitely try 1T...

130% Cpu current capability is enough for up to 5ghz. I use only 1.300v on cpu and 120% for my 4.5ghz overclock on my 3930k.

Command rate is most likely rated for 2, but try 1 first and see if it's stable, if not use 2 and you'll be good. I can post up some of my bios setting for my 4.5ghz overclock on my Sabertooth board if you would like to compare. Mines been running stable as a rock since the day the 3930k came out thumb.gif

We have good chips tongue.gif . I have one of the better ones seeing the charts on the SB-E Overclock thread as far as low voltage goes. I only need 1.375v Vcore for 4.8ghz. I use 6 dimm slots for 12gigs of ram.

Okay guys,

I've been playing a bit with some settings in BIOS.

Tried multiplier 45, with offset - 0.02, PLL 1.8V, VTT 1.25V, VCCSA 1.1V, LLC high (50%), CPU current cap. 130%, phase duty extreme, phase mode optimized, phase frequency 350.
Seemed pretty OK inside KeyShot. Prime95 (blend) gave BSOD immediately, though biggrin.gif.
Tried a bunch of other things with multiplier @ 45. Had BSOD again and again. Then realised I was just not feeling that comfortable fiddling with all these advanced settings & voltages (and probably not fully understanding my own interventions), thus reverted back to multiplier @ 43 and started from scratch. In the end 4.3GHz stable is what I'm aiming for...

This is what I have now:

27zxesp.jpg
2mqjhq0.jpg
2jbo0ts.jpg
2gyadrt.jpg
zunr4l.jpg

I've just done some short runs on Prime95 (blend, 10 min.). Seems to be stable.

CPU-Z tells me about VCORE:
load: 1.296V
idle: 0.68V

Tmax with Prime95: 72°C

What can I further attempt to get to a lower stable VCORE? Is there room for further improving this 4.3GHz OC?
Any other remarks about the settings posted above are very welcome!

greetings,
Dries
