Power supply issues (maybe?)

Thread Starter
So I've got a Seasonic (850-watt) in my main system, and it's been giving me some grief lately. I had an older PC Power & Cooling (750 watt) power supply laying around so I dropped that in to see if that worked, but it gave me issues as well. Here's what they're doing:

Seasonic:

- Powers on when the system is cold.
- Will power on immediately if I try to start it up after a shutdown if the system hasn't been on very long.
- Once the machine has warmed up, it won't power back on immediately after a shutdown, but after a minute or so, it will.

PCP&C:

- Will not power on when the system is cold. I have to either press the power button several times or hold it.
- Always powers back on if I try and power it back up immediately after shutdown. Regardless of how long the machine has been on.

The machine is stable with both units after it gets up and running.

So, it's pretty much either the power supplies or the motherboard. Since I'm having issues with both units, I'd normally assume it's the board. But, with the symptoms being basically the opposite between the two units, I don't know what to make of it. What do you guys think?

Does sound like the motherboard giving you problems. Its the thing that communicates with the power supply to turn on. With it needing a cooling off period, it sounds like something is overheating somewhere. How's the cooling in your case?

It's pretty decent. The thing is, it only needs the cooling down period with one of the power supplies.

EDIT: Also another bit of info I should add is: When I boot the PCP&C cold, and I have to press the power button 2 or 3 times, USB devices get power for a split second each time I press it.

You have a grounding issue. First make sure you're using a three prong outlet with ground present. Then use a multimeter to check continuity between your PSU's ground and the motherboard tray. If there's no continuity then either your PSU isn't correctly grounded or your case isn't. If there *is* continuity but you still have issues, I would hire an electrician to check your building's ground.

Seasonic has a replacement coming in the mail. It looks like I should have it tomorrow. If that's no dice, then I'll buy a multimeter. Is testing for that as simple as one probe on the PSU and one probe on the motherboard tray?

Pretty much, yeah. Test continuity between:

PSU power cord ground pin
PSU housing
PSU molex connector ground
PSU ATX connector ground
PSU mounting screw
Case frame
Case front panel
Case motherboard tray

These should all be electrically connected with close to 0 voltage potential across them. If they're all good then I would suspect that your outlet has faulty ground.

Ok, got the replacement. This one powers right up from a cold boot. I'll report in once the unit warms up.

It hasn't failed to boot yet. So it appears to be good to go. Though, it does have an intermittent buzz to it. I've forwarded a recording to Seasonic.
