SSD for a Windows XP netbook?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I plan on getting a used netbook for my younger brother since he'll be going to college this fall.
His netbook will just be used for websurfing and note-taking.. it's very underpowered:
Atom N270, 1 GB DDR2, 802.11b/g WiFi, XP Home Edition

Q1: I plan on swapping out the HDD with a SSD, but I know that XP does not support TRIM. Is this still a big issue, even with newer drives?

Q2: What SSDs do you guys recommend for this XP machine? (SATA III isn't a requirement, and I only need a small SSD [30-60 GB])

first of all i recommend you take xp off there and install linux. it will use less space on the ssd and run faster. something light such as lubuntu would be good and work great for note taking and web-surfing. now, for the ssd, i'm also considering greating a 30gig ssd soon, and right now im leaning on the corsair nova series 2

I want to ask you 1st, why install an SSD in a netbook that will have a very basic use? IMO that's spend your money.

Haha I just want something fast for him, plus in the event he drops the netbook I don't want him to lose all of his data like he would with a traditional HDD. Given the prices of SSDs lately, I think it's still very much worth it

I'm keeping it on Windows in the event he needs to load software that runs on Windows only.

Well, in that case I agree with stubbas and his suggestions. Personally I like more the quality and reliability, so, I'd go with the Crucial M4.

For Windows XP, I'd go Intel. Because they have the Intel SSD Toolbox for Windows OS's without Trim smile.gif

Ha that's pretty sweet!

But now the entire thread is moot, there's a good chance I won't be buying this netbook. May just wait for back to school sales to get a newer better spec'd netbook that qualifies for the $15 Windows 8 upgrade (which I will use for my sig rig, if that upgrade isn't linked to the key on the netbook or something)
