SVARTR & BLEIKR

Introduction

Hello all

I have been getting the rebuild bug again and after looking at various cases and not finding one that, a) Suits my needs, or b) I actually like the look of, I have decided to try and build a case from scratch using acrylic, my only real wishes for the case at this stage are that it can accommodate two 480 radiators and have the ability to switch from single to dual loops as painlessly as possible. Having never worked with acrylic before I am expecting a bit of a learning curve with a few (hopefully few) hiccups along the way.

At this stage I plan on just adding the hardware I already have, mainly stuff in my sig rig, though I will update the water cooling loop to suit the case as cooling is probably one of the most addictive parts of doing a build for me, this log will be more about the actual building of the case than whats actually in it, though that might change as I start to get idea's along the way.

Onto the case, I have drawn up initial plans for the case panels in gimp, unfortunately when I tried to use Google SketchUp my lack of skills showed through and I gave up, as it seemed harder than actually building the case itself, and anyways it's all liable to change as I will be making things up as I go along, crossing bridges as I come to them etc so having no preconceived ideas is probably a plus.

About the name, Svartr & Bleikr loosly translates from Old Norse to "Black & White" ( been reading to many Viking books), which will be the main color scheme of this build, will save me some cash reusing a lot of parts I already have, I will try and introduce a Norse element into the build somewhere along the line, I have some ideas but nothing is set in stone just yet.

Acrylic sheets and some 10mm x 10mm rods arrived today along with a tin of Weld-on 3.

P6110094.jpg

My plan is to use screws to hold the frame pieces together and then use the weld-on for the sheets, drilling the holes for the screws was harder than I thought it would be, if the drill speed is to fast the acrylic heats up and grabs the bit which is near impossible to get out, and drilling straight with a hand drill is a pain in the a**!, anyway after destroying 3 drill bits I think I've made some progress.

I ended up using a bit of soap to help make tapping the thread a bit easier, still have to clean it out with some hot water.

Thanks for the interest guy's, had a day off work Friday so got a bit done, cut the frame to length and screwed it all together, it looked ok but seemed a bit fragile.

P4290059.jpg

So i went out and got some 20mm x 20mm rod and replaced the cross members with that, seems a lot more solid, and I'm hoping that once the sheets are added it will all be good.

P5190065.jpg

I was thinking of cutting the mb tray out of the old Antec case in the photos but I see that Mountain Mods has a removeable one for sale so ordered one from them, will make life a bit easier, and also a bit of added incentive to make me tinker after work instead of sitting down with a beer and getting blown up in WoT's. smile.gif

What thickness acrylic are you going with?

Have 5mm for the case sides and am thinking of using 3mm for the inner panel and divider, ordered an A4 size sheet to experiment with, will hopefully arrive early this week. The 5mm is in clear so will have to paint it, did try to get the acrylic in a matt black but no local suppliers carry it but after reading how hard it is to keep fingerprints etc of the plexi I'm not to fussed.

Well finally happy with the frame so started on the first panel today (bottom panel just in case I stuffed it up), was going to cut it with my dremel but my test cuts on some scrap didn't come out to well, so thought I'd try the "scour and snap" method and am glad I did, much better result than I could of achieved cutting it with the tools I have, it snaps with a near perfect edge,I was really surprised at how easy it was and how well it came out. I started out thinking cutting the panels would be one of the harder jobs but hopefully will be a lot less work than I originally thought.
