New C2D build for a friend

Thread Starter
Alright, I've got a friend who wants me to build him a computer. He's got 2.5k right now and wants to build the best rig he can for the money. We've agreed on 10% of the parts cost as my build fee, so the actual price to spend on components would be about 2.25k

I was thinking

E6600 cpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003

mobo:
I hear the Asus P5B Deluxe is the way to go... but do I need to get the wi/fi version or no?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131045
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131028

I don't know much about DDR2 RAM (as far as what is good) but we want a good 2GB kit with tight timings at stock speed, but he'd also like to try his hand at overclocking a bit

case:
he wants an armor

optical drives:
dual dvd burners, or a dvd rom and a burner

video:
probably a 7900GT as dx10 is right around the corner

sound:
x-fi extreme music

hdd:
probably 2 320gb seagate 7200.10 in RAID 0

PSU:
I'm thinking either the same psu I've got, seasonic s12-600 or an FSP/OCZ. they're all good enough, so I'll prob let him choose that

cooler:
what's the best air cooler out now... I've kinda been out of the air cooling loop for a while

TV tuner:
I'll prob get him a Haupauge card... had the best luck w/ them

He doesn't need a monitor/keyboard/speakers or anything like that right now. he's waiting 2 weeks for his next paycheck.

If he is gonna go all out on dx10 then he shouldnt grab a 7900gt because he's just gonna scrap it in like 5 months.

I'd suggest an x850xt or x1650 pro, x1600xt. or maybe 2x 7600GT's in SLI

well I was just talking about that with him. dx10 hardware gets launched in like 2 weeks right? so he could have a dx10 card now... but there are pros and cons to that as well

8800GTS and GTX should be available in early November but I would hold off on a DX10 card until atleast summer of next year.

Until then, best bet would either be a X1900XT OC'd past XTX speeds or a 7900GTO OC'd past GTX speeds.

Or if you want to go the inexpensive route, the X850XT is outstanding value at ~$125. Nothing in that price range touches a X850XT, especially when you OC it.

As for RAM, G. Skill 6400HZ (4-4-4-12) is the RAM of choice, can OC to 1000mhz and is about $290 for 2g. Or the Super Talent 6400, if I had the money I'd get the Super Talent.

Air coolers: Scythe Infinity would be my choice, or a Big Typhoon VX, or the slightly cheaper Freezer 7 Pro. The Freezer 7 Pro is just behind the Big Typhoon in cooling capability but at half the cost.

If you are getting the E6600 you may want to look at the P5W DH. It's the same price as P5B. You really want to keep the FSB at or below 400mhz because after that the NB timings go to hell and the clock increase on the processor don't outweigh the looser timings on the NB.

If you can swing it in the budget, get an E6700 and run it at 400FSB for 4ghz.

I'm thinking that my friend will probably wait to get a dx10 card till he upgrades to vista and has a dx10 game he wants to play. That's why I went for the 7900 series card

Alright, I just finalized the order...

CPU: E6700
Mobo: Asus P5W DH Deluxe/WiFi
RAM: G.skill HZ DDR2 800
GFX: EVGA 7900GT
Sound: X-Fi Xtreme Music
HDD: 2x Seagate 7200.10 320Gb
PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750
Optical drives: NEC 18x DVD burner & Sony DVD-Rom
Case: TT Armor
TV Tuner: Haupauge PVR150 MCE kit
OS: Win XP Media Center 05 w/ free Vista upgrade
CPU Cooler: Scythe Infinity
GPU Cooler: Zalman VF900
AS5

The total came to like $2332.78 shipped
Add my 10% and the total is 2,566.06
There are $65 in rebates so, basically I'm on budget, I upgraded the mobo and TV tuner, added an OS and a gpu cooler, and only slightly slimmed down the sound card and gpu... but the x-fi front panel is unnecessary, and the gfx card doesn't matter because my friend will probably buy a DX10 card as soon as they drop in price.

I think this is going to be a very solid build. (don't think I forgot anything!)
